APNU’s Presidential Candidate David Granger

A Partnership for National Unity’s (APNU) Presidential Candidate, David Granger, says that they will not boycott the upcoming election and believes that its demands are just and will be met.

Granger was at the time responding to calls from the likes of the Guyana Trades Union Congress that had called for minimum standards to be in place for the election to be considered free and fair or else the opposition should boycott.

Granger insists that their demands will be met and as such there will be no need to boycott the election.

“Unless all contesting parties are given unfettered access to the media we don’t believe that it will be free and fair.”

One of the final demands by the Opposition parties is the equitable access to the state-owned media so that the electorate can be able to access information.

Speaking on the APNU Prime Ministerial Candidate, Granger said that the grouping is almost complete with the negotiations and will make an announcement soon– possibly in a week’s time.

He did not rule out that the Prime Ministerial Candidate is Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine but clearly stated that there has to be consensus among the parties in the coalition.

Granger said that it is not a case that the Peoples National Congress Reform has the largest membership of APNU thus would want to railroad a choice through the process.

He insists that the leadership corps of APNU will be unveiled in a timely manner that will allow the electorate to assess the grouping.

Granger did concede that to date Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine has been identified as a member of the leadership team and that as late as Tuesday evening there were meetings to finalise this team to be presented to the electorate.

He said that it is not a matter of some technicality holding up the process but rather a broad-based agreement from all five of the members of APNU. “There is no hold up; we are in negotiations almost on a weekly basis.”

The retired brigadier told media operatives that APNU is trying to embed in its leadership the EGGGO principle which speaks to, “Ethnic, Gender, Geographic, Generational and Occupational” balance. “That is what we are fine tuning.”

He did decline to say who was on the list of about two dozen persons. Granger denied that the delay in naming the leadership team has held up the inflow of any funds saying that the mere fact that they have a partnership has stimulated an influx of funds for the campaign.

Granger says that they are happy to see what they felt was a breach of the constitution with the suspension of CNS TV 6 being postponed. However there is still a lot to be done.

He said that unless the media is allowed to freely report activities of political parties and their policies, voters would not be informed to make the decision that they need to make.
