A social worker living on the East Coast Demerara is thanking her lucky stars that her neighbour responded in a timely manner and extinguished a fire that would have certainly destroyed her car. Forty-seven-year-old Parbattie Dowlatram, of 178 Tract A, Coldingen is convinced that the car was deliberately set alight while she was fast asleep. The suspect was believed to be another resident of the community with whom she is having an ongoing feud. But fortunately for her she only had to replace a burnt tyre and would need a slight paint job to repair the damage done to the Toyota Allion motorcar which has been in her possession for the past four years. Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Dowlatram said that she returned home from Masjid about 22:00 hours and secured her car which is usually parked in front of her yard. About 01:50 hours she was aroused from her sleep by the barking of dogs; then her cell phone rang. It was her neighbour, who informed her that her car was on fire. “I rush out and I saw the neighbour’s husband trying to put out the fire,” Dowlatram said. “He told me that he got up to make tea for his baby when he saw the fire. He said he saw a fine, dark skin, tall person on a bicycle ride up the road and look back,” Dowlatram added. According to the woman, she suspects a resident who had threatened her recently. The police were summoned to the scene but Dowlatram said that although they examined the scene they left behind a bottle which was believed to have contained a flammable liquid used to set the fire. However, police have assured that they are investigating the matter.
