GUYANESE of all ages, even babies in prams, last night again converged along the route, on the seawall, and along the East Coast corridor to catch a glimpse of the Diwali Motorcade on its way to the La Bonne Intention Community Ground, where thousands more waited for the commencement of the annual Diwali programe, a Guyanese calendar event annually hosted by the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha. Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud has taken Hinduism to new heights in a multiplicity of ways, creating many ingenious firsts in this land where ancestors’ traditions are honoured and the ancient scriptures revered. Among the many firsts is the popular calendar event, the countrywide annual Diwali Motorcade, which continues to achieve unbelievable creative heights, with entries every year surpassing those of the previous year.According to the organisation, the Deepavali motorcade is now indisputably the largest event in the country and brings together people from different religious persuasions, races, and ages in an atmosphere of harmony as they converge at strategic points countrywide to view the elaborate floats depicting the sublime message, through various interpretations, of the divine festival of lights, as symbolized by Mahalakshmi, the benevolent mother of the world, who bestows upon her children light, wealth, and love. The events were incident-free as everyone seem to have heeded the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s appeal for individuals to refrain from using alcoholic beverages, which were strictly prohibited at all of the events that were planned, admissions to which were absolutely free. The Sabha’s central motorcade moved last evening from the Shri Krishna Mandir in Campbellville, proceeding through Sandy Babb Street, JB Singh Highway, Kitty Public Road, along the East Coast Public Road to the LBI Community Centre Ground.
The cultural programme showcased the amazing talent of the country’s top singers, including Sookrani Boodhoo, Rekha Singh and Seeta Panday, among others. Young singers from the Dharmic Sabha’s cultural youth arm, Emerging Voices, mesmerized the audience with their performance, while the Dharmic Nritya Sangh captured everyone’s hearts with their superlative dance performances. In his address, President Bharrat Jagdeo urged the audience to reflect on the modern day message enshrined in the traditional festival of Deepavali and recalled all the years of struggle of Guyanese across all the divides in Guyana for freedom from first the colonials, who suppressed Indian and African culture to eradicate the identity of this once-colonised people, as well as the dictatorship of the past, which kept the nation under another type of subjugation. He reminded the audience that Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud and the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha were integral forces in all Guyana’s historical struggles to restore freedom in the nation – a freedom he urged the attentive crowd of thousands to guard, because it was dearly won – at great cost, and it is under constant threat. The president appealed for everyone to resolve to do the right thing on elections day, because elections are also a continuance of the struggle to ensure that one’s culture and identity are no longer placed under threat by those who want to take Guyana backwards.
He lauded Pandit Reepu Daman Persaud for the role he played as a staunch member of the People’s Progressive Party and encouraged support for Donald Ramotar – a tried and tested member of the PPP to become President, thereby ensuring that the dearly-won freedoms continue and progress would escalate in the land. He closed by thanking the audience for their strong support during his term as president and reiterated that the contemporary interpretation of Diwali is making enlightened choices to ensure a brighter future for everyone in the country.
