"You huddled masses from that mudland of poverty and privation who fled to me, land of liberty and plenty, bear this in mind: Had it not been for that daredevil sailorboy Christopher Columbus, none of you would have been born in the New World and this America would not have become God's Country. [OK, that is disputable, but now not the time for that].So, give thanks to the intrepid Genoese sailor on this Columbus Day." -- Lady Liberty.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS

Replies sorted oldest to newest

To me he is a mass murderer. He arrived to 50 million or so native peoples living in the americas. When he departed this life there were only around 14 million left. Since he came and led by example, everyone else came and murdered and pillaged and claim everything in the name of alien gods. As Menchu said "

  1. For me, to celebrate the twelfth of October [Columbus Day] is the absolute expression of triumphism, occupation and presumptuousness, and I think that history will remember those that celebrate it."

* You have to admire Columbus' sense of adventure.

* What if Columbus had been told:

Chris my bwoy--now is not the time to sail--you have to wait until we solve our other priorities--war, famine, poverty, crime, pollution, disease, racial hatred, ebola, etc, etc

* Oh well! It's not a holiday for me tomorrow.

Wally, I remember one paragraph in the WI history book that started with 'Spanish wealth aroused much jealousy among other nations anxious themselves to become rich'.
Columbus started that. GOLD! GOLD! GOLD! It's unfortunate they became rich at the expense of the natives.

Cristoforo Colombo or Christopher Columbus was not the first person who discover the Americas, nor specifically the first European individual.

The First Nations - Native Indians or Aboriginals - were the first to cross from as far as the northwest parts of Canada and the eastern parts of then Russia for eons before Columbus to occupy the areas.

Columbus caused mass destruction to the Native Indians/Aboriginals with various actions by killing them for the joy of having fun, plus numerous atrocities.

Of course, "history" is written to preserved and perpetrate the actions of these activities while the true issues are held in seclusion, or in many cased deleted from the storage of history.

Well, if you don't want to celebrate him, petition the US government to abolish Columbus Day.

BTW, I agree with the points made by Storm, Nehru and yourself. In the greater scheme of things, however, Columbus stands out as a towering historical figure, nevermind America is named after another explorer named Amerigo VespÞssÃ―.

Look, you all leff Guyana and gone to Merika and get a holiday today and you all not thankful? You all Guyanese hard to please.
