Putin is a stupid man. His nation is a basket case and its only hope is selling its abundant oil to western Europe. He gains nothing in these petty squabbles and is well on the way to isolating Russia again and ruining his economy worse than it is.
The people who died here are among the world's best virologists and they have been beneficial even to europe. Their loss is a loss to the planet.

He is not stupid... the problem is that American politicians cannot come to terms with the idea of a man outside America having too much power. For them is unacceptable, a historical error.
