The police are investigating the murder of a female toddler, whose mutilated body was found floating in a canal at Crane Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara (WCD) yesterday morning.

The identity and age of the toddler remained unknown up to press time.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a brief statement yesterday, said that the child’s body was found facing upward. Her left hand was missing.

The toddler’s body was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where she was officially pronounced dead.

When Sunday Stabroek visited the area yesterday, residents said they only learnt of the discovery of the body yesterday morning.

They were in shock at the gruesome discovery. “Whoever is responsible should pay for it,” an angry resident told this newspaper.

Another said that the toddler was not likely the child of anyone in the area.

The body of the toddler is at the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour awaiting a post-mortem examination.

This is disturbing. How can someone carry a baby for 9 months living inside them and have no feelings to do this kind of thing. I'm going to assume that this was an unwanted pregnancy and mother was hiding the fact she was pregnant from family/friends.

Baigan barta , read carefully.  The child was a toddler.  New born babies are usually not toddlers.  Ramakant was the only exception--he was a champion runner from day one on earth. Seriously, don't make assumptions , wait for the police to complete their investigation.

Morality and the value system is changing in Guyana, for the worse. Since independence, Guyana has not got any proper leadership and many people were allowed to do as they please.  Some leaders were worse than others, by displaying a vulgar and arrogant attitude, that was copied by the youth. Respect for people older than some is lost, even towards parents. Many children are left in Guyana with unknown relatives, who abused them, while their parents went overseas and did not see them again for over a decade.

Some people don't understand any other reason, for dumping a child in a canal.
