Bahrain orders U.S. diplomat to leave country
‘NOT WELCOMED’: Tom Malinowski arrived in Bahrain on Sunday and had been scheduled to stay for three days [AP]

WASHINGTON has said that it is “deeply concerned” by Bahrain’s demand that a top U.S. diplomat leave the country after he met with a leading Shia Opposition group.Bahrain’s foreign ministry said in a statement on Monday that U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Tom Malinowski is not welcome in the country.

It said that he intervened in the country’s domestic affairs by holding meetings with some groups at the expense of others.

Malinowski, who arrived in the country on Sunday and had been scheduled to stay for three days, was ordered to leave after meeting with Bahrain’s Shia Opposition group, Al-Wefaq.

In a statement on Monday, U.S. state department spokesperson Jen Psaki said: “The United States is deeply concerned by…Bahrain’s decision to demand the immediate departure of Tom Malinowski.

“Assistant Secretary Malinowski’s visit to Bahrain had been coordinated far in advance and warmly welcomed and encouraged by the government of Bahrain.

“Contrary to our longstanding bilateral relationship and in violation of international diplomatic protocol, the government insisted – without advance warning and after his visit had already commenced – to have a Foreign Ministry representative present at all of Malinowski’s private meetings with individuals and groups representing a broad spectrum of Bahraini society.

“These actions are not consistent with the strong partnership between the United States and Bahrain.”

‘VISION’

Bahrain, a tiny island nation that is home to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, has been roiled by near-daily protests by Shia Muslims seeking greater political rights and inspired by the Arab Spring wave of revolutions that started in early 2011.

The government moved to crush the uprising, which threatened to spill into neighbouring Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries with Shia populations, with the help of regional Gulf Arab forces.

Repeated rounds of political talks have failed to significantly close the rifts between the country’s Sunni monarchy and majority Shia factions.

Bahrain’s foreign ministry said the kingdom’s relations with the U.S. remain strong and important, but that such meetings were divisive.

Malinowski’s actions, added the statement, “run counter to conventional diplomatic norms”.

Al-Wefaq spokesman Abdul Jalil Khalil told the AP news agency that Malinowski met with the group on Sunday evening and was scheduled to hold a joint meeting with them and other opposition groups on Tuesday.

“He had a vision to end the political crisis in Bahrain, especially since the region is witnessing political unrest in Iraq and Syria,” Khalil said of the meeting.

This woman cannot be easily moved. No man cannot sweep her off her feet. Try lifting her. She is Guyana heavy weight champion. She made Sharma Jr. quit, and cause a major storm in the opposition camps. She has the power to tell the US ambassador to shut up and get the hell out of meh country.

That's Priya for you, Danyael boy.

She is stupid. Sam hinds diplomatically absent himself as well as a host of others who did not want to read that speech.

Mitwah, to say someone is stupid is just your opinion. If Priya had to be fired or sanction for doing her job, the opposition would have had a field day. The opposition is there to make everything contrary for the ruling party. However, she's still the minister of education.

However, she's still the minister of education.

And Priya Manichchand will continue to be Minister of Education plus the possibility of being in other senior government positions.

Well she was not as smart as Sam Hinds et al. Did you read what Dr. Roger Luncheon said about how she was duped into throwing the stone, when others excused themselves?

Anyway I will be seeing her at a BBQ soon.

WHat is there to say? The Kingdom is sitting on a bomb with a slow burning fuse and the longer it refuses to mediate its prevailing political disputes the more intractable they will become.
