Bail for driver in presidential convoy accident

A MAN was yesterday arraigned before Providence Magistrate Alex Moore for dangerous driving, after he slammed into one of President David Granger’s escort cars, injuring two police officers in the process.Winston Mitchel pleaded guilty to two traffic-related offences, which occurred on December 17 at Friendship Public Road, East Bank Demerara.

While driving his motor car along the Friendship Public Road, Mitchel allegedly failed to stop and give the right of way when he heard the sirens approaching. Because of his failure to adhere to the law, he crashed into the escort car and injured the two police officers.

Mitchel told Magistrate Moore that he was on his way to the airport with his father, and did not hear the sirens but saw when one of the cars attempted to direct him to the curb. He failed to see the oncoming cars.

“I tried to prevent an accident and caused another accident. Ah sarry, my Honour,” Mitchel told the court.

Magistrate Moore scolded him about his recklessness, as he could have caused serious injury to the country’s leader, road users and the lawmen.

Mitchel has to compensate each of the injured officers with $30,000 on or before January 15, or serve a prison sentence.

Why did the judge schooled him about his recklessness could have casused injuries to the country's leader? Was Granger the only person in the convoy? Evey live is important on the road.
