Nadiya Hussain was born to a British Bangladeshi family in Luton, where she grew up.
The 32-year-old is one of six children, with three sisters and two brothers, and her father was a chef who owned an Indian restaurant.
Her mother had no interest in food, however, and used the family oven for storage.
Nevertheless, Nadiya developed an interest in cooking during her school years.
She then taught herself how to cook like a pro by reading piles of recipe books and watching instructional videos on YouTube.
She later married and moved to Leeds, where she began studying for an Open University degree.
In 2015 Nadiya was crowned winner of Bake Off.
She was the sixth champ to have won the hit show.
During the final she baked 16 iced buns, a raspberry-flavoured mille-feuille, and a multi-layered cake called “My Big Fat British Wedding Cake”.
During her acceptance speech, she said: “I’m never gonna put boundaries on myself ever again. I’m never gonna say I can’t do it.
“I’m never gonna say ‘maybe’. I’m never gonna say, ‘I don’t think I can.’ I can and I will.”
Nadiya has been rushed off her feet since winning the show, releasing several cookbooks and even baking a cake for the 90th birthday celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II.
She regularly appears on The One Show on BBC1 and had her own cookery show, The Chronicles of Nadiya.
Now the dough wizard is going to appear on a new BBC2 series called Nadiya's British Food Adventure, in conjunction with her new book of the same name, which is out on July 13.
The show will see her take a road trip around Britain to discover traditional and more quirky British dishes before recreating them back in her kitchen.
Busy bee Nadiya has also written a children's book of stories and recipes, Bake Me A Story, and she is also writing three contemporary women’s fiction novels for Harlequin.

The Big Family Cooking Showdown will be a replacement show for The Great British Bake Off, which has moved to Channel 4.
Sixteen families will welcome the BBC into their own kitchens to whip up dishes using their favourite family recipes.
Challenges will be set in both the studio kitchen and home kitchens up and down the country during each hour-long show, whittling down the teams of cooks through a series of challenges.
Nadiya will host the show along with Zoe Ball.
Speaking about her new job, Nadiya said: “Family and food have always gone hand in hand and I’m looking forward to getting to know the recipes and traditions of the different families taking part.
“Having been through a food competition as an amateur cook myself, I know exactly how tough it can get and so I’ll be there for them, alongside Zoe, as the pressure really builds!”
