The Guyana Tennis Association (GLTA) in collaboration with Bakewell has undertaken the fourth edition of the Bakewell Junior Open tournament with the objective to strengthen and expose the junior players to more court time as well as stronger competition.
The event also commemorates the late CEO of Bakewell, Naeem Nasir, in honour of his contribution to national sport events, specifically tennis. Nasir constructed a tennis court at Presidentβs College during 2010, where matches were played during the course of competition. Bakewell has been a big supporter in the junior tennis development and at the opening ceremony they reconfirmed this commitment to the association. It goes beyond financial contribution to a place of understanding the importance of providing a safe space for the creation of productive young people. There has been growth in the entrance of new players into the competition from upcoming clubs. President, Jamal Goodluck, indicated that it is a good sign to press ahead for quality facilities so that more international players can be invited to participate next year. This is the only way we can see true growth and development. Three categories- Under-12, Under-14 and Under-18 are being contested for boys and girls. The round robin format is used for maximum competition and observance of performance. This is particularly used to prepare the players for the upcoming goodwill games at the end of October. Guyana will be hosting French Guiana and Suriname at this yearβs Inter-Guiana Games, which will be rebranded. Results In the boys under-12 Round Robin: Jeremiah Kalekyezi and Vadeanand Resaul continue to show promise as they were both able to secure two wins, while Wayne Baker and Nigel Lowe won one match a piece. New comers to the competition, Ramacindo Ricky and Shaquille Murray did not advance to the knockout round but continue to show fight. Girls under-12 saw an emerging rivalry between Akilah Jones and Amba Persuad. Jones won four of the round-robin matches, while Amaba took second gaining three wins. However, the head to head between the two players was close. These two players will be fierce competitors. However, the young female Kalekyezi showed that she has what it takes to deliver. Paula won two matches in her first appearance in this competition. Rashida Hardy won one and Nandanee Ramdyhan was unsuccessful in securing a match. Joshua Kalekyezi advanced to the knockout stage of the boys under-14 after locking two wins over Akil Brown and Wayne Baker. In the other round robin grouping, his younger brother, Jeremiah Kalekyezi dominated with two wins over Adesh Khayyam and Gabriel Thomas. The other two contenders for the title are Viraj Sharma (3 wins) and Vadeanand Resaul (2 wins). Nigel Lowe and Renaldo Alexander were eliminated in this division. In the girls under 14, Sarah Klautky proved formidable in her grouping with two wins over Akilah Jones and Anele Barton. While Alana Chung dominated with two wins over Nathalie Ramdyhan and Amba Persaud.
