Balram Shane Memorial Competition…Port Mourant get past powerhouse Albion 4 years in succession

A fine and disciplined display of batting and bowling from the Port Mourant Cricket Club players led them to another victory over the star studded Albion Cricket Club in the Annual Balram Shane Memorial Trophy match held at the Albion Community Center last Sunday 26th November.
Winning the Toss and electing to bat first, the determined batsmen of Port Mourant scored 250 runs in their 45 overs.
Top scoring for Port Mourant was National Under-19 batsman Alex Algu with a belligerent 93 off 96 deliveries. The composed and fluent Samuel Kishnasammy scored a well played 55 off 75 deliveries, while Troy Gonsalves 27, Marcus Watkins 13 and Demetri Cameron 12 not out, all provided valuable support.
Spearheading the Albion Cricket Club’s bowling was National spinner, Verasammy Permaul who took 3 wickets in his 9 overs for 39 runs. Balchand Baldeo 2-57 off his 8 overs, Rajiv Ivan 2-47 8 overs and Sharaaz Ramcharran 1-44 in his 9 overs were the other wicket takers.
Batting for the Albion Cricket Club, Surujnarine Kandasammy top scored with 54, Jonathon Foo 40, Adrian Sukwah 40 and David Latchaya 38 were the leading scorers. Albion Cricket Club fell for 243 in their 45 overs.
In Port Mourant’s bowling, Skipper Lloydel Lewis took 3 for 19 runs in his 5 overs, while Kelon Carmichael had figures of 3 for 40 in his 9 overs. Nial Smith and Troy Gonsalves supported with figures of 2-40 and 1-40 respectively. Port Mourant won by 7 runs.
Alex Algu of Port Mourant was adjudged the best batsman and man of the match for his 93 runs, while Port Mourant’s Captain Lloydel Lewis copped the Best bowler’s award for his figures of 3-19 in 5 overs.
The Balram Shane Competition is an Annual Memorial Game sponsored by the Shane family in memory of their late father Mr. Balram Shane. The game is in its 15th edition; Port Mourant having won the competition for the last 4 consecutive years.
Mr. Deonarine Balram, at the presentation ceremony, expressed his satisfaction at the level of the competition, and the discipline of the players, and said that his father’s memory is indeed being preserved by such an occasion.
He wished the 2 teams well, especially Port Mourant for upsetting the star studded Albion for the past 4 years, and urged all the players to stay focused on their game, and stay off the bad habits.
