A so far unidentified bandit was on Tuesday morning killed during a robbery of a Cuban national at 176 Crown Street, Queenstown, Georgetown.

The News Room understands that the victim, a Chef, 33, returned from his Charlotte Street, Georgetown workplace at around 04:30 hrs with a taxi. Upon exiting the car, he opened the gate and walked a short distance to the El Sol Hostel where he resides.

However, upon reaching the entrance of the building, he felt a gun pointed to his neck and heard a male voice demanding cash and valuables.

The victim was thrown to the ground and struck to the face while the bandit managed to steal a cell phone, US$300 and an undisclosed sum of Guyanese currency.

At this point, a private security guard who is employed by the owner of the building emerged from inside the building.

The bandit reportedly pointed his gun at the security guard and attempted to flee but was shot dead by the security guard.

Police said the stolen item an unlicensed high point pistol with a live round were found at the scene.

A Police investigation has been launched into the incident while the body is presently at Lyken’s Funeral Parlour awaiting identification and post-mortem.

Popular miner Patrick Harding robbed at gunpoint; car hijacked

Patrick Harding, former President of the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association, was on Monday evening attacked by two men – one bearing a gun – who flung him out of his vehicle and sped off with it.

Harding is a popular miner and currently serves as the Vice President of the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC).

Roger Harper, President of the DCC, told News Room Harding was returning from South Georgetown through Cemetery Road.

Once turning left on Princess Street, he pulled over to make a telephone call.

It was then that a car pulled up alongside him and ordered him to take the window down.

Once they had access to the car, they snatched Harding and flung him to the other side of the road after which they fled away with his Toyota Allion car; the car is Silver Grey and bears registration number PWW 5610.

Both of Harding’s hands are now in casts because of the injuries he suffered.

The matter was reported to the Police
