One of the letters received by a public servant in Barbados

(Nation News)Several workers at the National Housing Corporation received letters ending their employment this morning.

The action appears to be part of the Government move to rein its burdensome fiscal deficit.

Those affected are from the customer service and accounts departments and general workers responsible for the maintenance of the housing units. Some of the dismissed workers received their letters from their various work sites including the Pine Depot around 8:30 a.m.

But Minister of Housing and Lands, Denis Kellman told the Nation that he was unaware of the exact number of those affected.

According to Kellman, whose office is based at the NHC, the statutory agency was being restructured to make it more efficient.

However, upset workers who were running between the NHC and the National Union of Public Workers claimed that the Government had broken its own rule by dismissing workers from the same household.

The Press is yet to get an official position from the Government about the plan layoffs of at least 3 000 workers scheduled to start today and conclude by the end of March.

NUPW general secretary Dennis Clarke said the dismissals had taken him by surprise since he thought there would be further discussion based on what the union had proposed to Government.

He said they had met two days ago with the NHC and were asking that workers with more than ten years’ service not be terminated because they were pensionable.

Clarke said the NUPW was prepared to fight the issue all the way to court.

Leaving 83k square miles to pack an island that is not even 30 miles long!!!

What billions are foreigners pouring in by the way? I asked you many times to list the foreign investors and you were never able to. Most of the hotels in Bdos are owned by either the govt or local private sector interests.

Caribj,

You will say anything to discredit the government. It is a fact that some people are assisted financially by their relatives living in the North America. It is also a fact that many Guyanese work for decent salaries that enable them the luxury of owning a cell phone in addition to being a homeowner. If a survey is done in Guyana it will show that Guyanese do not depend on financial assistance from their families abroad as much as it is perceived. Give credit where credit is due.

Like the people say let the ministers, who earn US$3k PLUS housing and transportation allowances live on the US$175 that most Guyanese must eke out a living. This when rents are now at around US$300/month in G/twn for BASIC housing.

No wonder nurses go around begging for "a food". By the 3rd week their salary is spent and have to scrounge around until pay day. That is those who aren't ambitious enough to get their CSME certification and flee to Barbados where a very high % of the nurses are Guyanese. Teachers too.

By the way youth unemployment in Guyana is so high that the PPP refuses to engage in any discussion of this. Hundreds of UG students cant find work/ So what about your average semi literate product of the PPPs "fine" educational system, which continues to generate the lowest average performance in critical subjects among countries which use CXC?
