Hate Speech, Nazi-Inspired Vandalism Rears Ugly Head in Trump Aftermath

From anti-immigrant postings on social media to swastikas scrawled on storefronts and a Black doll found with a noose around its neck, some Trump supporters are acting on his rhetoric

By Moses Frenck

The election of President-Elect Donald Trump has emboldened some of his supporters to act out on his campaign rhetoric with impunity. Despite Trump’s call for the nation to come together, many of those who voted for him consider his selection to be mandate.

In the immediate aftermath of Trump’s victory, the hatred spread from vicious posts on Facebook and Twitter, to intimidation in the streets, to multiple acts of vandalism.

In Philadelphia, swastikas and Trump’s name (with the T replaced by an additional swastika) were spray-painted on a storefront, including the words “Sieg Heil 2016.” Sieg heil was the victory salute adopted by the Nazis in the 1930s.

Elsewhere in Philadelphia, a white SUV was covered in black spray paint that read “Trump Rules” and “Black Bitch,” and a city police spokesperson said they have responded to reports of vandalism of “multiple autos and houses.”

Hate Speech, Nazi-Inspired Vandalism Rears Ugly Head in Trump AftermathThe Nazi vandalism was found the day after Trump’s election and on the 78th anniversary of Kristallnacht in Germany, also known as the Night of Broken Glass, when fascists vandalized and burned Jewish homes, shops and synagogues.

“Folks who are inclined to be mean to other folks feel very empowered at the moment,” artist Caryn Kunkle, who first discovered the vandalism on the Philadelphia storefront, told local media.

In the Buffalo area, property was defaced with swastikas and the words “Make America White Again.” According to the Buffalo area’s Wellsville Daily Reporter, the Wellsville police chief saw no cause for action. The town is located in Allegany County, where 61 percent of the vote went to Trump, according to New York State Board of Elections.

At Canisius College in Buffalo, a Black doll was found hung by a noose in an elevator on Tuesday night at a freshman dorm. The incident prompted a quick response from Canisius President John Hurley, who strongly condemned the “despicable act” in a letter to faculty, staff and students.

Meanwhile, in Rochester, New York, a gay pride flag flying on someone’s porch was burned. Rochester police are investigating the incident as arson and a possible hate crime.

As election results started coming in on Tuesday night, Twitter began filling up with tweets telling immigrants to “pack your bags,” “get the fu*k out you piece of sh*t” and that they are being hunted.

One post addressing immigrants with the caption, “The wolves are coming. Do you hear them? They’ve had a taste of blood. They want their meal” included a video where the person says “wolves are hungry and we have been spoiling for a fight … you are now the hunted.” The tweet was posted by “Grabby Nimble,” whose Twitter page features an image of planet Earth wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat.

And for those young people who are skipping school to protest the Trump victory, and the Yale professor who postponed his exam because his students said they were tired after looking at the late night returns and disappointed in the Trump win, they need to go out and vote and get a grip on reality.

We cannot change the rules of the game after the fact and then reverse the results...democracy simply does not work that way.

How you know these people did not vote?

How can you give a pass to the folks with their racist vandalism, but complain about kids skipping school and postponment of exam?

Not giving a pass to anyone, nor am I a Trump supporter. CNN interviewed some of them on the protest line who said they did not vote because Bernie Sanders was not on the ticket. But now they dont like the person who was elected so they were "moved" to oppose Trump.

Hey Knucklehead, like you just woke up or what?. You sound like those protesters, many of whom are shouting profanities, who now want to reverse the results because they dislike person elected. And you want me to "shut your trap". You cant have it both ways. Its like the PNC allowing free and fair elections under Hoyte, but when they lose they cry fowl. We have to live with this for 4 years. The Democrats failed, and failed miserably to defeat a candidate who was easily defeatable.

These are extreme behavior by some people, and no doubt encouraged by Trump's rhetoric. But Trump will have to condemn these actions as the President, because he, hopefully,  does understand that governing a country is not the same as running a campaign...otherwise his tenure will be riddled with roadblocks.

This is not looking good.  My best advice to all those offended by these Americans is to buy a one way ticket to the homeland.  The government there would welcome you with open arms, and your family would be glad to see you for Christmas.

Why do Indians support the PPP and why do Africans support the PNC? People will support a candidate of their choice who they feel represent their interests. I dont believe that the vast majority of people who support Trump are all racists and deplorables. And to take this further, some people who voted for him do acknowledge that Trump (again, I dont want to defend this knucklehead) will not be able to do all the things he promised. Many were satisfied in sending a message to failed politicians.

If Trump was a very flawed candidate...Hillary, as the results show, was a much more flawed candidate. This election is as much a victory for Trump madness as it is a failure of the Democratic party.

In fact when the issue of race was raised under Obama we always got lectures from him almost implying that blacks were exaggerating the problem and that we must "understand" the plight of the white working class.

Trump has won. He will lead a country radically different from what we have been living in for at least the past 25 years, as even Bush didn't so nakedly appeal to bigots.

Rather than whining and wailing it will make more sense to focus on reducing Trump's power by winning back the Senate, and getting more seats in the House, and putting GOP politicians in moderate areas that bigotry, or tolerance of bigotry, will not be tolerated.

The alienated parts of the Dem base will have to be motivated to vote. In fact MORE Dem senators are up for election in 2018, so this increases the potential for the GOP to get a filibuster proof Senate if Dems cry and blame the world instead of addressing the reasons why they lost!

THIS is what will help. NOT useless protests designed only to vent.

All I am saying is you cannot blame him for the extreme behavior of these few deplorables. Yes, Trump said some really nasty and stupid things (but not like the ones posted here). I am sure there will be more, but he has a responsibility to condemn them if these people are doing them in his name.

Also the more alienated will the Dem base will be, if they see them allowing Trump to do this.

Yes I had a knowing sense of unease when I saw Hillary being passive aggressive, thinking that Trump's screaming and foul mouthed vulgarity would be enough for him to lose.

Well many voters have foul mouth bosses, some of whom are sex pigs, and yet these people give them a chance to feed and house their families.

And, how about the rhetoric being used by these protesters? And what if it leads to violence, as this seems to be where its heading. Are we going to give them a pass?

Protest is one thing...but I was disappointed by what I saw last night...the burning of effigy, profanity on faces, obscene signs...

Unbelievable

It's just a handful of extremists who are under the watchful eyes of the FBI. They are deathly afraid of the American gov't.  Any abuse of Trump's presidential power shall lead to an indictment.  The Republican party will not allow him to do as he pleases.

I do favor protests, and often these are the only tools available for the disenfranchised.

But I admire the way that MLK protested.

1. He had specific measurable goals.

2. In addition to protests he lobbied.

3. He didn't degrade his cause with allowing child like behavior.

But then this is the generation whose parents were afraid of hurting their feelings so rushed to cater to their whims. They will soon learn that the real world is harsh and uncaring.

What's up with folks who say go back to your country if you voice your dissatisfaction with something...it's just so assinine and rather childish, and actually shows a lack of abilty and mental capacity to have a discussion
