Basketball Federation to accelerate preparation for CentroBasket

The Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has indicated that preparation for Guyana’s historic appearance at the CentroBasket Under-17 Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, will be accelerated over the coming weeks.
Guyana’s male Under-16 basketball team created history last year when it played the final of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships where the team lost to The Bahamas, but automatically qualified for the CentroBasket U-17 Championships.
The top three teams from the CBC Championship bounce forward to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) CentroBasket contest. Guyana’s U-16 team became the first team to reach the CentroBasket level in the country’s basketball history.
The 2017 tournament will be held during July 26–30 and Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation President, Nigel Hinds has said that despite some challenges, Guyana will be well-represented at the international tournament that features regional giants.
“I am confident that we will be there. I will ensure that expectations are exceeded,” Hinds said in a brief comment to Kaieteur Sport from overseas. Guyana’s U-16 team won the National Sports Commission (NSC) Sports Team of the Year last year, while the governing GABF was awarded the Sports Association of the Year prize.
