Essequibo beat President’s XI by 47 runs

Berbice captured the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) female inter county U19 T20 title after beating Demerara by nine wickets yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club.

Berbice decision to insert the home team paid dividends as medium pacer Shabika Gajnabi and Shaiana Barth removed Casey Charles (00) and Roshine Budhu (00) respectively to reduce them to 8-2. Demerara then lost their most experienced batter Mandy Mangru who was caught off Omadevi Matadin (03) before Yogeeta Balkishun (03) departed leaving their team in trouble at 18-4.
Matadin then removed Sherry Ann-Fraser (03), but Abigale Scott and Tasleema Bacchus added 33 for the sixth-wicket to steady the innings somewhat before Bacchus was removed by Lafona Gilgeous for six. Following her demise, the rest of the batting failed to offer any resistance against the steady Berbicians as Demerara were bowled out for 68 in 17.2 overs.
Scott remained unbeaten on 28 with two fours and one six, while Gajnabi picked up 3-4 from four overs; Amadevi Matadin had 2-11 and Shenika Grimmond 2-19.
Pacer Fraser trapped Sheneta Grimmond lbw without scoring as Berbice lost their first wicket with the score on three. However, Marian Samaroo and Gajnabi added 66 for the second wicket to ensure their team lifted the title. Samaroo hit two fours in top scoring with an unbeaten 25, while, skipper Gajnabi made 11 not out as Berbice finished on 69-1 in seven overs. Fraser had 1-25.
Earlier, Essequibo defeated the President’s XI by 47 runs. Batting first, Essequibo were restricted to 13-3 before Stacy Moses hit two fours in a top score of 20, while Keesha Tucker added 16 and Eylinda Abrams 11 to help their team to 88-8 off their reduced quota of 14 overs due to rain. Kassia Munroe claimed 4-28 and Russhanna Lynch 2-14.
The President’s XI never threatened and were sent packing for 41 in 10.2 overs in reply. Only Kamim Ramsammy reached double figures with 13 as off-spinner Kemmone Thomas bagged 6-9.
