Berbice Chamber of Commerce & Trojan @PSL Cycle Club hold Arrival Day Race

The Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA) in collaboration with the Trojan @PSL Cycle Club of New Amsterdam successfully held a 50 mile cycle race on Friday 5th May. The event was held to mark Arrival Day in Guyana. This event also marks the first such collaboration between the Chamber of Commerce and the Cycle Club.
The race started at 9:25 am, with the riders being sent off by a representative from the Indian High Commission. The route for the fifty mile race was from Main & Chapel Street, New Amsterdam to the Nand Persaud & Company Business Complex at No36 Village, Corentyne and back to its point of origin.
Twenty nine cyclists participated in the race which was contested in five categories: Senior Open, Junior Open, Veteran’s, Women’s and Juveniles.
The event was won by Andre (Padlock) Green of the Sonics Cycle Club, who clocked a time of two hours and fifteen minutes. He received cash incentive and trophy compliments of the Nand Persaud and Company Limited. The five other top finishers were Stephano (Sunny Pro) Husbands of Team Coco, Christopher (Chicken Legs) Griffith of Team Alanis, Leer Nunes of Carlton Wheelers, who won the fourth place, Britton John of United We Stand with the fifth place and sixth going to Silvio Innis of Linden Bauxhaul Flyers.
The Junior Open category saw Britton John riding away with the first place from Curtis (Chappy) Dey and Jason Cameron who came in third.
The Veteran’s category winner was Leer Nunes from Everal Mundy and Ian (Dumb Boy) Jackson.
The Women’s category had only two contestants with Deance Welch placing first and Shemika Teixeira second. They were both awarded trophies. The Juvenile category saw Kevin Collins winning from Jonathan Ramsuchit and Jamar Heligar.
Eight sprint prizes were awarded with Greene taking (four), Dey (three) and Husbands (one).
A brief presentation ceremony, which was chaired by BCCDA Secretary Mr. Mark Roopnarine, was held at the conclusion of the race. The organizers expressed their satisfaction with the event, noting that the new Executives of the Berbice Chamber have been in place for just over a week and are already showing what they are capable of.
BCCDA President Mr. Ryan Alexander noted that the Chamber is aiming to play a bigger part in promoting sports, education and community activities in the region. Alexander also encouraged those members of the business community who are not yet members of the Chamber to join, since they are all in a position to contribute to the development in the region through the Chamber. He also used the opportunity to call on other non-governmental organisation to collaborate with the BCCDA to help the society be a better place.
The organizers assured that this race was the first of what will become an annual activity.
