GTA welcomes Dutch tourists at Moleson Creek

More than 300 Dutch tourists were on Thursday given a royal welcome on their arrival at Moleson Creek, Berbice.

The tourists hail from Suriname and Holland. While some of the tourists had been brought into the country through the Garage Tour Company from Suriname

and are expected to spend three days, another group came from the country to participate in the Inter-Guyana Games.

GTA Director Indranauth Haralsingh said the number of tourists entering the country will have a positive impact on Guyana’s economy. “From transportation, fuel, hotels, tourists will go shopping and will be visiting most of the sites around Georgetown and Splashmins among other places… and when they shop… and dine, travel around, it is bringing a lot of benefits to Guyana and will bring benefits to the Guyanese people,” he noted.

He said the Tourism Ministry is also working with the tour company to promote tours in the country, especially since the annual Jamzone Summer Break is right around the corner.

“There will be a large contingent coming in from Suriname for the R Kelly Show,” he pointed out. The GTA director stated that his organisation is pleased to be partnering with Suriname to ensure that on a consistent basis there is a large influx of visitors since this would be great for Guyana, especially since this is the influx season for the country.

Haralsingh also disclosed that GTA will also be recording crossings from Moleson Creek, the Lethem border, and the Ogle International Airport; hence, it is looking forward to record an additional amount of tourists into the country this year.

He added that both the GTA and the private sector will continue to partner to promote tourism since thus far it has resulted in many persons travelling into the country. “This is healthy for Guyana’s tourism as this sector continues to grow in Guyana, as visitor’s satisfaction continues to improve and as Guyana continues to do well at the international and regional scene.”

He said GTA is currently working with Suriname through the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organisation   (ACTO) level to establish a tourism manual between Guyana, Suriname and Brazil to promote cross border and multi-destination tourism. As part of its mandate, GTA also welcomed a group from three communities in New York visiting Berbice.
