GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Former President Bharrat Jagdeo has been named as Opposition Leader by the main opposition People's Progressive Party /Civic (PPP/C), even though it has still to determined whether or not to take its position in the National Assembly.
PPP/C General Secretary Clement Rohee told a news conference Monday that the PPP’s legislators have already been identified and that the party’s list of regional representatives has been forwarded to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).
Rohee confirmed that a report carried in a daily newspaper here identifying Jagdeo as the Opposition Leader was true and that it was now left to the former head of State to accept or reject the position.
"I could confirm that I did give the interview, I could confirm that I gave the interview to a Guyana Times correspondent and I could confirm that what was in the Guyana Times is what I said,” Rohee told reporters.
The report noted that Jagdeo, who served as president from 1999-2011 was seen as the most suitable candidate from a list that also included former president Donald Ramotar and Rohee.
The PPP/C controls 32 of the 65 seats in the National Assembly, but the party has claimed that the May 16 poll was rigged and has since filed a petition to declare the results null and void.
Rohee told reporters that a "total package" would be presented when the party takes up its seats in Parliament, including, "the deputy speaker... if it comes to that.
“We have identified all 32 candidates," he added.
