Lucky Dollar being gutted and City Mall under threat, as a fire tender hydraulic system goes into action to douse the flames.

A  huge fire on Regent Street just west of Alexander Street was Tuesday morning engulfing several stores including Boyo’s Fashions.

Lucky Dollar has been already destroyed and City Mall is under threat. Residents and businesses on Robb Street immediately behind the fire are soaking their properties to stave off the intense heat.

I've seen all the negative rap from those who glorify every sad news Guyana suffers.

Redux, Stormborn, Warrior and others are Uncivilised. They are ROBBER BARRONS who are determined to have a chance to ROB the guyanese People.

Nehru, you just had to be an idiot, didn't you? What the frig do the people you just mentioned have to do with the fire? You surely are a fool.

So much for a statement recently made about how ole Guyanese people wise, that wisdom shit stopped soon as they started hiding behind keyboards, would be my guess.

What Abdabi said was also stupid, it takes an idiot to come up with such a statement.

What the people that's being mentioned here is against is not Guyana, they are against the corrupted PPP Govt that's taking the country and its people for a ride at the peoples expense.

What is so friggin difficult to understand about that?

Sorry to hear Mits but that does NOT change who those ROBBER BARRONS are.

Bhaiji, all I am saying this is a sad occasion and I am asking that our comments be bereft of compassion and sympathy for those who have lost property and life.

This is the third and final time Bhai Ramdat suffered. His family lost everything in the fire and my heart felt condolences go out them.

If there are lost of lives due to the fire, a swift investigation is warranted to see if any foul play is involved, or it's just a freak accident.

Fire early Tuesday morning destroyed several stores on Regent Street, Georgetown and one man died of a heart attack on seeing the flames raging towards his building. Several persons living in a store had to be rescued.

At least 50 persons, mostly customer service personnel, are now jobless.

65-year old Ramdat Sheowprasad, a co-owner of Indra’s Fashions, succumbed at a city hospital, leaving behind his son, Balram Sheowprasad to deal with grief and losses.

The Sheowprasads lived upstairs and Indra's Fashions was on the lower flat of the concrete and wooden building.  “This could be built back; my father can’t be brought back. I don’t know estimates right now,” said Ramdat when asked to estimate his losses.

The Sheowprasads building at that same location was destroyed by fire in 1987. The then Yassin’s Store, located on the same spot as Lucky Dollar, was also destroyed then by the same fire.

Fire Chief Marlon Gentle said four Chinese nationals, who lived in the store they owned, were rescued by fire fighters. “One of the fire fighters approached and heard knocking on the shutters and they used equipment to prise the shutters open. When they cut it open, they found four Chinese nationals trapped in the building. They had to cut the glass,  break the grills and get them out,’ he said.

The concrete building housing Lucky Dollar was gutted and a large quantity of items was burnt and water-soaked. Boyo’s Fashions and three other stores, housed in wooden buildings, were also destroyed by the fire of unknown origin.

Ramdat said he was trying to contact the Fire Department around 5:15 AM on telephone number 911 but no one answered.

“Seeing the fire from till here, since then we are calling 911 but no body never answered. I called MMC so they could alert the Fire Department and then is when I saw them coming about five minutes after,” he said.

The fire is believed to have started in the building immediately west of Prince’s Restaurant.

Fire fighters depended on water from nearby canals because water was not available from the hydrants.

Residents and business owners on Robb Street were not affected by the fire..

This is the second major fire in the business district, the first being on April 1 whe several stores at the corner of Regent and Wellington Streets were destroyed in a building that was the subject of a court hearing.

Let's play fair, yugi. We can't add fire to fire to solve a problem.

And you cant help but display your racism.  No proof but you must play the "evil blackman" card.

Suppose it was some PPP supporter looking for insurance money, not caring how he made others suffer?  yes we can play that card to, knowing how corrupt you all are.

This is a display of the racism which allowed the PPP to publish bigoted nonsense about AfroGuyanese and then shoot them down in cold blood, and then pretend as if the slaughter was in reaction to violence.

The PPP was in power for 19 years last November. Ample time for people to develop an opinion about them.  Yet African and mixed Guyanese turned out in high numbers to show the PPP how much they hate them.  Yes after 19 years the PPP made no inroads into this group.

Now if you chose to infer anything other than the fact that when 95% of a group has an opinion about any entity it must be that their own experiences lead them to a conclusion that such entity is hostile to them, BASED ON REAL FACTS.

You can deny this fact all you wish but I suggest that if you really want to see Guyana progress you develop an understanding that it never will if over 40% of the population feel excluded by virtue of not being Indian.

Not only do almost all Africans think that the PPP is a racist outfit but clearly most mixed Guyanese share that opinion.  APNU got 41% of the votes almost exclusively from those blocks.  The AFC got some of those votes, so very few were left for the PPP to gobble up.

So the racist rants that we see daily about blacks.  The disregard that we see daily about blacks.  The deliberate attempts to distort the truth that we daily see about blacks.

These are not isolated. This is asystematic attempt by the PPP to stigmatize AfroGuyanese to justify squeezing them out of playing any role in determining which direction Guyana should take.

You do NOT see stereotypes peddled against Indians on GNI and that ought to tell you something.  No wonder some consider GNI to be a hate site.

Fire began aback Chinese-run storePDF | Print |

Extreme right is the burnt out store that was operated by the Chinese. They also lived at the back of the enterprise where the blaze started.

Fire officials were Wednesday narrowing down leads into the cause of Tuesday morning’s fire that ripped through three buildings that housed six businesses on the busy Regent Street, Georgetown business district.

Fire Chief, Marlon Gentle said investigators have already concluded that the blaze began at the back of one of the stores that was also occupied by four Chinese nationals as a dwelling. The fire occurred on the northern hand of Regent Street between Camp and Alexander Streets.

One lead that the probe team is exploring is whether one of the Chinese was cooking on a gas stove that malfunctioned and the blaze eventually caught combustible materials that were nearby.

The two males and two females were miraculously rescued when a fire fighter heard them banging the gate from inside. The metal gate, glass door and  grill were quickly opened by fire fighters. Among them was a woman who exited with a bag of money that she held tenaciously between her legs.

She was later attacked by a group of robbers on Alexander Street but she laid on the bag even as they were beating up. They eventually escaped when they saw a number of fire fighters approaching and she sought refuge in one of the fire tenders.

Co-owner of Indra’s Fashion’s, 65-year old Ramdat Shiwprasad succumbed to a heart attack he suffered when he saw the gnawing tongues of flames approaching his building. Back in the 1980s, his building and Yassins Store- the same spot on which sits Lucky Dollar- were destroyed by fire.

The fire quickly consumed the decades old wooden building and another adjoining it before engulfing Indra’s Fashions and partly gutting Lucky Dollar.

The smouldering area has been cordoned off under police guard to prevent anyone from disrupting the scene.

Lucky Dollar, Indra’s Fashions, a cellular phone store, Boyo’s Fashion’s, the Chinese-run store and a duplex owned by Clairan’s Enterprises were all affected the fire
