US Senator seeks Pachauri's resignation

Washington, Feb 9, (PTI):

A Republican Senator has asked Rajendra K Pachauri, Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, to resign after revelations of alleged ongoing scientific fraud under him.

Pachauri has denied those charges. "Every day, new scandals emerge about the so called 'facts' in the UN reports. The integrity of the data and the integrity of the science have been compromised," Senator John Barrasso, said on the Senate floor on February 4. Barrasso is a member of both the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Environment and Public Works Committee.

Pachauri in a spot as climategate hits TERI

  • Rajendra K. Pachauri, chairman of UN's Nobel Peace Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), had advocated emission reductions at the recently concluded Copenhagen Climate Summit.

But back home in India, he seems to be failing to uphold standards of propriety in his professional dealings.

During his tenure, first as director from 1982, and then as director-general of The Energy Research Institute (TERI) since 2001, Pachauri was a member of the boards of the Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), three of India's biggest public sector energy companies, all of whom by the very nature of their business contribute heavily to greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions, according to the IPCC, are adding to the country's growing carbon footprint and hastening climate change.

TERI, in fact, entered into business dealings with these companies and allegedly benefitted from Pachauri's association with them. Pachauri's dealings have also been noticed by the international media. Recently, the Sunday Telegraph of London had accused him of amassing a fortune using his links with carbon trading companies. Pachauri dismisses the report as "a pack of lies".

Is Pachauri's appointment as head of Iwokarama a govt decision? I don't think so, Iwokarama has a board that appoints its chairman and is funded by donor nations. In addition Rajendra K Pachauri is a Nobel prize winner. Was the Nobel committee wrong or are we to believe a Republican with an ax to grind?

Please stay with your Guyanese references as it may serve you better.

PS

It will be a education for you and the many other to understand what it takes to be considered for a Noble Prize.

What "obscure" republican  are you talking about? The accusations against him of sloppy scientific work and for profiteering is being made by many reputable news agencies citing their sources inclusive of those in the scientific community in his own country. I do not know the details but if indeed he is a profiteer with his hands into backroom deals as is stated, he discredits his post and should quit. This is not merely about bad science but about profiteering.

Stupid man, if this gentleman is doing as they say he is doing he is a greedy rotten scoundrel. Shouting and accusing others of defaming him is not going to help. Let the story unfold and if there is indeed evidence of sloppiness or profiteering the ought to resign.  Cussing wont help him. His integrity, if he has any, will has to do the trick.

Kwame, Julius sex tape hits the streets

A mad rush to hear the sex tape in the city yesterday

Risking arrest, activist Mark Benschop yesterday caused a stir in the Stabroek Market area after he used a music vendor’s cart to play a taped sex conversation of a government official, prompting scores to flock around him.
Benschop, who is no stranger to clashes with authority, arrived shortly after 11:00 hrs at the Ministry of Human and Social Services where he played the tape recording, ostensibly for Minister Priya Manickchand-Murli to respond in view of the fact that she had claimed that she had not heard the tape.
According to the activist, who also operates an internet radio which has been growing in popularity, explained that he has learnt that the Minister has not heard the controversial tape and as such he decided to “accommodate” her.
“Government must take action on this. Kwame (â€Ķ..surname mentioned) has used his office to intimidate people. In this case, a little boy has been the victim. Kwame is not the victimâ€Ķit is the little boy who is the victim. The Minister of Human Services must make a statement on this matter.”
Even though several staffers of the ministry were seen hanging over the balcony with amused looks on their faces, there were no signs of the minister and Benschop, after a 30 minutes wait, made his way pushing the cart to Brickdam Road to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He was trailed by several persons who shouted encouragement and said “da is Kwame voiceâ€Ķ”
According to a passerby, Benschop “look like he selling CD nowâ€Ķ”
In front of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Benschop did not have time to settle down when two ranks came out of the compound and inquired his reason for being there.
The activist explained that he had heard that Minister Clement Rohee, who also heads the police force, had not heard the tape between “Kwame” and the little boy and therefore he is assisting by bringing the tape.
The two ranks returned to the compound and shortly after, a senior police officer came out and again inquired the reason for Benschop’s presence.
Benschop again explained. However, the officer advised him that permission is needed to conduct his exercise. At this, the activist asked the officer for ways in which he could achieve his objective, that is, to give Minister Rohee an opportunity to listen to the tape.
He was directed to the Brickdam Police Station to see Commander Leroy Brummel.
He also advised Benschop to turn the volume down on the cart.
The activist then turned his cart around and made his way back down Brickdam where police orderlies of the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts warned him to turn it down again. He headed to the Stabroek Market area, north of Demico, where crowds gathered around listening to the tape.
Since the tape became public, there has been deafening silence from the government side.

Govt pay New GPC six times retail cost for pharmaceuticals â€Ķ

Probe needed into all drug supply contracts  – APNU’s Dr George Norton

The government needs to come clean; it needs to explain how it decides on drug supply contracts that have largely favoured the New Guyana Pharmaceutical Corporation (New GPC), says Dr George Norton.

Bobby Ramroop

“The situation needs to be brought out in the open,” Dr Norton, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Member of Parliament told Kaieteur News.
APNU is the country’s main opposition party, and Dr Norton is responsible for health issues from the opposition benches in the National Assembly.
He said that for years now, the opposition has argued that there is not a level playing field in the acquisition of drugs for the country’s hospitals.
Dr Norton charged that because of the government’s one-stop option of New GPC, citizens have been robbed of critical drugs.
He said that some pharmacies at health facilities are without some drugs simply because New GPC cannot bring it or doesn’t bring it on time.
“If you can’t get it from New GPC, you just do without,” Norton explained in an interview with Kaieteur News.
He said that for years the opposition saw an unhealthy trend of the New GPC benefitting from most, if not all of the contracts for the importation of medical drugs.
“All the doubts and accusations about the award of such contracts should be cleared up by the government in the interest of the citizens of Guyana,” Dr Norton declared.
Dr Norton recalled the time when it was complained that selected bidders are chosen for contracts. He made mention of International Pharmaceutical Agency (IPA) whose head, Lloyd Singh, complained that the Ministry of Health is spending taxpayers money and if there was prequalification of tenders and allocation of funds it must go through a level and transparent process.

The Nobel committee is often wrong. They gave the Peace Prize to Kissinger (and Obama!) and the Economics Prize to Milton Friedman.
