BISHOP INTRODUCES RESOLUTION EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS IN GUYANA
COLUMBUS, GA – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02) introduced a resolution in the United States House of Representatives expressing support for democratic elections in the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and released the following statement:
“The people of Guyana have demonstrated enormous patience and courage during this recount. I remain hopeful that once the results of the recount are finalized, Guyana can embark on a future of great promise that reflects the will of their people.”
Guyana voted in general and multiparty elections on March 2, 2020, but a recount was ordered by the Guyana Elections Commission on March 15, 2020 after irregularities were discovered in the vote tabulation process. The recount, which is expected to be completed this week, was conducted under the supervision of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
In addition to commending the people of Guyana for holding multiparty general and regional elections and supporting the current recount, the resolution also “calls on all parties to respect the Declaration of Results consistent with the laws of Guyana as the final decision and make a vow of peace and stability in Guyana.” Finally, the resolution “calls on the citizens of Guyana to remain calm and to respect the rule of law and human rights as the recount proceeds under the framework of respected democratic norms.”
In 1998, Congressman Bishop introduced a similar resolution following multiparty elections in Guyana. Co-sponsors of the 2020 House Concurrent Resolution are Representatives Henry C. “Hank” Johnson, Jr. (D-GA), Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL), Donald M. Payne, Jr. (D-NJ), and Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX).
