21lbs cocaine, 101lbs ganja found in Lethem

…2 arrested, 1 suspect on the run

Sixty-one taped parcels containing 9.5 kilograms (21 pounds) of cocaine and 45.9 kilograms (101 pounds) of compressed ganja were confiscated by the Police during a raid at an incomplete structure at Tabatinga, Lethem, Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).
Reports are that around 19:30h on Wednesday evening, the Police, acting on information, visited the location, where they spotted a male. Upon realising that ranks were closing in on him, the suspect fled the scene, and is yet to be apprehended.
According to the Police, when the incomplete structure was searched, the parcels containing the illegal substances were found.
Two males were subsequently arrested in connection with the find and were said to be assisting with the investigation.
One of the men has been identified as the owner of the property in which the drugs were found while the second person was arrested after he attempted to bribe Police Officers.
Guyana Times was told that the second arrest was made following a sting operation set up by the Police. It was noted that the suspect attempted to pay ranks a huge sum of money to have the drugs returned to him.
According to the Police, this discovery was as a result of a “good intelligence” system in that area. It is believed that the drugs discovered were for local distribution and not to be trafficked outside of the country.
Investigations into the matter continue.
Earlier in the week, ranks of the Police Narcotics Branch arrested 24-year-old Rena Jagernauth of West Coast Berbice, who had in her possession in excess of 10 pounds of cocaine concealed in books at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
The four books were reportedly in her luggage. According to information received, the woman cut holes in the centres of the books and stashed the cocaine inside. She then used glue to paste the pages together. She was sentenced to four years in prison and fined $13 million.
