GEORGETOWN, Guyana — A Chinese mining company says it plans a $100 million expansion of its bauxite operations in the South American country of Guyana.

Chongqing-based Bosai Minerals Group says it will build a new kiln to process bauxite at its plant in southeast Linden, as well as install heavy-duty generators and equipment to reduce dust pollution following complaints from local residents.

The kiln is expected to produce proppants and mullites. Proppants are widely used in the petroleum industry for hydraulic fracturing, while mullites are used by the glass and steel sectors. Bosai says it wants to tap into those markets.
Prime Minister Robert Persaud said late Monday that the expansion would create 500 new jobs.
