‘Both Green and I deserve adequate pensions’

Dear Editor,

I wish to add my views and experience to a letter headed ‘Green pension bill is timely’ in SN of November 23. I would first like to express my gratitude to the writer, Bevon Currie, who out of the wilderness mentioned my name in his letter, when all my political bedfellows have abandoned me.

I have no problem with the pension for Mr Hamilton Green, whom I met in 1968 at Jacklow, Pomeroon River when I chaired a public meeting for him, even though I was a PPP activist.

Originating in farming and being a US trained dental technician, I practised in the county of Essequibo. In 1957, the late Dr Cheddi Jagan accompanied by Harripersaud Nokta, solicited my help to build the party, not to build myself and family. My political culture and practice was different, which irked my colleagues. In the early 1970s, I was elected a Member of Parliament. My parliamentary salary was paid into the party’s bank account and the party withheld an amount for party funds. In applying for my NIS benefits, the party was delinquent in paying my contributions. I had to settle on a compromise with reduced benefits.

In an effort at extra-parliamentary struggle, when the objective and subjective conditions were pertinent in the Parliament in February 1991, I hurled a missile in the direction of the Speaker who was well versed in parliamentary procedure and could not be compared to the then Deputy Speaker, whose original profession was hire car driver.  However, the Standing Orders were not adhered to and I was expelled. The then Prime Minister, Mr Hamilton Green, came to my residence and apologized.

By 1993, I was elected Chairman of the National Congress of Local Democratic Organs (NCLDO), in accordance with Article 79 of the 1980 Constitution, an office consistent with that of a senior minister. The administration then from 1994-2001, paid me a lesser salary than a Regional Chairman, all of whom were political appointees.

During the last 20 years, I tried my best to have this issue solved; three former presidents knew of it. Three former ministers of local government with the exception of Mr Ganga Persaud, were unable to differentiate a constitutional office from a party appointee. My retroactive payments would exceed one million. Both Mr Hamilton Green and I deserve adequate pensions; our days are numbered.

Yours faithfully,

Isahak Basir

The new breed PPP,fatten themselves at the trough plus some raking in huge pensions.

Look at Ganga an ordinary bicycle riding school teacher and the other young fella Irfaan who paid next to nothing for Guysuco land and built a massive pool with pool house, these fellas became multi-millionaires in twenty three yrs,

My 80+ yrs friend told Jagdeo about the corruption of these fellas,he didn't get a strait answer thief does protect thief.

Hamiltone Greene actions cause the deaths of several innocent East Indian people when Dr Cheddi Jagan was premier of British Guiana. To support this anti-koolie racist monster serial is an unforgiveable act of betrayal when it comes from a fellow koolie. A koolie taking a stone and throwing it at a fellow koolie may make a person a hero in the eyes of anti-koolie but for me it just shows self hate. No pension should have been given.

Isahak Basir suffered more indignities and eyepass from the PPP than his pension problem. Three years ago Basir had already packed his bag to attend the PPP as a delegate from the Essequibo Coast. Lo and behold, he got a phone call from Freedom House, informing him that his name was scratched out from the delegates' list and he should stay home. When asked for details and reasons, the caller merely said that the order came from Bharrat Jagdeo. Isahak Basir was a card-carrying financial member of the PPP since the 1950s. Because of his activism, he was shot and nearly died, but survived because of the professionalism of Dr Gladstone Mitchell at the Suddie Hospital.

Very sad.

There was a time when the arrogance of the top brass of the PPP got out of control. It is why we are in opposition today.

My hope is that when a NEW leadership of the PPP is chosen, the party charts a new course in dealing with voices of dissent.

The PNC fought and scrambled at their conference but kiss and made up. The PPP needs to understand this.

The old school chaps at freedom house need to be sent packing. A new generation needs to take over and chart a new course for the good of the party.

That won't happen, yuji. In 10 days' time the next PPP congress will be held at the Cotton Field Secondary School on the Essequibo Coast. I am reliably informed that Jagdeo and his crooked coterie have been weeding out real and perceived Jaganites from the delegates lists submitted by party groups. Only Jagdeoite followers will be delegates to the congress. So, the newly elected Central Committee will be overwhelmingly pro-Jagdeo.

Gil,

We need to let the process take it's course. We cannot speculate and rely on rumours.

Jaganites are considered communists, we need a new infusion of capitalists and brave leaders who are willing to tackle the social and economic issues facing Guyana today.

Guyana is poised for an economic collapse under the AFC/PNC. They need to be removed immediately.

i SPOKE OF THIS IN DETAILS AND did predict THE PPP WILL LOSE THE ELECTION BECAUSE OF ARROGANCE. With all the good the PPP did and the PROGRESS they brought to the Guyanese people, the Leadership was childish, arrogant and thought they were invincible.

I hope and pray they have learn a great lesson.

I think Nandalall should be the next President of Guyana to ensure PROGRESS and PROSPERITY.

Nandalall has some baggage. Most of the current PPP members are old school brainwashed dinosaurs(ask Gilly). Time for change with young blood who think outside the box. Practise Trumpism on them. If you can't dazzle them with brillance; dazzle them with bullshit.

All the eligible candidates have baggage. However, I think Nandlall would be the best and safest choice of the lot. Never mind the chatree phone call two years ago. Time to move on.

Don't you think the "sperm money" would be a problem in a general election?

Not 10 days.  11 days.  And I agree that the Jaganites should be weeded out.  We have enough geriatric politicians in Guyana who don't know how to run a country.

When you put your name next to Hamilton Green's and ask for justification for both of you, how can anyone take you seriously?  Seriously?

Basir did not put his name next to Hamilton Green's when the PPP was in power. Why didn't Jagdeo and Ramotar pay him. Both of them knew about his problem. And, before you even think of belittling the poor man, lemme tell you this: In 2013 the PPP denied Basir a seat at its congress in Berbice. In 2015 APNU+AFC approached Basir to join their election campaign. Basir declined politely. Basir and his wife went to the polling place and voted PPP.

I am referring to his letter where he is fighting for Green.  Maybe Green should be fighting for him since he controls the powers that be in the PNC.  If the government owes him money, he should be paid.  Oh, and I know another man who wasn't treated so nice and he too voted PPP in 2015.  These guys are a different bunch from the Tamil Chief.

Basir is not "fighting for Green." This is what he wrote: "I wish to add my views and experience to a letter headed ‘Green pension bill is timely’ in SN of November 23. If Bevon Currie didn't mention Basir's name, the old man would not have penned his letter to the press. And, saying "I have no problem with the pension for Mr Hamilton Green" is not tantamount to "fighting for Green."

Green's latest pension request is unethical and lawless and he should have a problem with it.  Sounds like he has a good case for his own pension but his agreement for Green's pension diminishes his own.  Rightfully or wrongfully - I don't know.

From what he is saying though, sounds like he is receiving a pension, but he has a problem with the amount.  And how does Bevon Currie knows his personal business to mention his name out of the wilderness??

Bibi Haniffa

Just peeping out today from my hospital bed to say that I support Anil Nandalall to be the next President. He has less baggage to carry. All the old folks and the corruption crew should not put their names in for consideration.

And how does Bevon Currie knows his personal business to mention his name out of the wilderness?? [Bibi, lemme answer your question this way: When I was in the PPP some "comrades" had falsely insinuated that I was a double-agent working for Burnham. Why, because they noticed I was socializing with plenty blackman friends. Basir faced something similar. That's why he writes: "My political culture and practice was different, which irked my colleagues." In his everyday life Basir maintains cordial relations with all kinds, regardless of politics or race. In the 1990s David Granger produced a monthly journal named GUYANA REVIEW. Basir contributed a number of historical articles to that publication. Freedom House didn't like it although Basir explained that he was not writing about controversial political issues but about Essequibo Coast history. Bevon Currie is one of Basir's acquaintances.]

Thank you Alena. There are days when I have no energy. I listen to quite a lot of Bhajans fro the late 40s to current day. I read the Ramayana and the Geeta daily. Take care.

Were you a double agent?  Based on your postings here, I have often wondered about that myself.

DEFINITELY NOT. I was a card-carrying PPP member from 1969 to 1992. I never joined any other party. However, unlike most Indo PPP supporters and members, I did not restrict my social intercourse to Indians only. I am a broadminded and tolerant person who doesn't see things in black and white, or black and brown. My circle of friends and acquaintances is wide and varied. Political affiliation is not a criterion in my selection of friends. For me, life is larger than PPP politics. Evidently, it seems to be a crime to say something positive about the PPP's enemies/opponents.

Bibi, I know you love the PPP. I have no problem with your choice. But, how much do you KNOW Freedom House? For my part, up to May 1992 I knew Freedom House like the palm of my hand. IMO, Freedom House was a House of Paranoia. I saw how a lot of innocent comrades were unjustly and unreasonably subjected to suspicion and slander. It looks like nothing has changed in that regard.

They must have really screwed you for you to run into the arms of the PNC, the diametrically opposite.  Maybe no soup was shared out to you, this is what normally drives political types to the other side.
