Indian politician claims that rape is 'sometimes right' as country reels from sexual assault, hanging of teen girls
Babulal Gaur, a cabinet minister in the ruling Bharatiya Janata party, is a 'social crime' and can only be considered such if it is reported to police.
An Indian politician has claimed that rape is "sometimes right".
"This is a social crime which depends on men and women; sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong,โ said cabinet minister Babulal Gaur.
His comments came as India still reels from the brutal gang rape of two teenage girls.
Gaur represents , which swept to power in the countryโs May general elections.
He said that rape can only be considered a crime if it is reported to police.
"Until there's a complaint, nothing can happen," he said, as reported by The Independent.
Gaur's comments are just the latest controversial remarks by Indian public figures regarding rape.
Mulayam Singh Yadav, who heads a political party in the Uttar Pradesh region where the recent gang rapes took place, spoke out about proposed changes to bring in the death penalty for rapists.
"Boys commit mistakes: Will they be hanged for rape?" he asked.
Further sex attacks have also come to light in recent days in India, including one where a woman was gang-raped, then forced to drink acid before being strangled to death.
