The Government of Guyana has announced that it has received reports of a potential domestic security threat; and with effect from tomorrow, Saturday, November 12, 2016, a Joint Services operation will commence in targeted areas to ensure citizens’ safety.

In a statement issued earlier today by the Ministry of the Presidency, the government is urging citizens not be alarmed but to cooperate with security forces where necessary.

Following is the full statement:

The Government of Guyana has received credible information related to a potential domestic security threat.  That coupled with increased criminal activity has resulted in the decision by the Administration to institute security measures in targeted areas, startingtomorrow. These operations will be conducted by the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Citizens can expect to see helicopters providing aerial coverage and an increased number of police officers, along with members of the GDF on the ground in certain areas.  Citizens are asked not be alarmed but to cooperate with security forces where necessary. The safety of all residents and visitors to Guyana remains a top priority for the administration.

I think they will move into indo neighborhood ...

We are seeing a repeat of the Burnham era.

Indos of today are not like the Indos of yesterday.

As you pointed out, the Burnhamite era has begun. Let us be vigilant and pray for the safety of our brothers if that actually happens.

An assault on Indo neighbourhoods will be a call for the UN and International  Human Rights agencies to intervene and stop any such assault.

So disappointed.  Only now and with some cock and bull story of some threat.  The threat was there all along but Granger was rewarding the bandits.

Another case of wag the dog to cover up the focus from jackass Granger's incompetence. After the exercise, they will sport and wine down and throw in a few back balling.

Did you  actally say backballing?

Let the nation know what is this potential threat.  This looks like a rehearsal of Burnham's use of the military in elections to secure his magic majority.  Good to see a growing political consciousness amongst our people since this new gov't. began doing contrary to what they promised and what many did not expect.

Billy Ram Balgobin

This is the first step of Granger in instituting emergency rule.  This gives them him the opportunity to act with impunity and violate the basic rights of the innocent citizens.  And like in the Burnham era, Indians [including their leaders] will be disproportionately targeted!!

Imran bhai, nothing that the coalition gov't implements to curb the crime rate will be acceptable by individuals who dislikes them.

The safety of the citizens of Guyana should not be used like a political football.
