KONAWARUK, Guyana, May 17 2015 – Authorities in Guyana say 18 miners were buried alive in a gold mine in the Konawaruk area Sunday afternoon.

Media reports say the face of the mining pit caved in on 18 miners who were working there.

Seven of the trapped miners were rescued; two are in critical condition and five are being treated at the Madhia Hospital.

The mining operator reportedly had no permission to be on the land.

Nah Bhai. What would I be doing there? I was planting Poi Bhaji in the garden, plus some Jamaican Callaloo. Were you there?

I went there to pickup some food... I get my POI Climbing ones at Oceans. Where did you get the Jamaican Callaloo?

Nehru, we hope that your human insticnts will get the better of you. These miners were probably operating in unsafe conditions and it is a disaster that is man-made. As Riff said, these are humans with families and it is a human tragedy. Where does anything political come into this I do not know.

I hope you're chastened enough.

If this is beyond the capability of Guyana to rescue, they should seek foreign help very soon. Due to gas build-up in a sealed mine.

Other countries have done so with immediate result.

The government should also investigate all aspects of mining in Guyana, especially inexperience youth working on same claims, where they die.

Also mercury, cyanide  and other pollutions, including large amounts of oil in some interior rivers, that prevents AmerIndian villages from  using  the water.

Some source of drinking water is only from rain, that could be challenging in dry seasons.
