Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr. Barton Scotland today called in the police to remove People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Parliamentarian, Bishop Juan Edghill from the National Assembly.

The drama unfolded in the House when the Speaker asked Edghill to sit and he refused. As the police arrived, other PPP Parliamentarians surrounded him, preventing the cops from removing Edghill.

The Sergeant at Arms stands to next to Edghill as he refused to be removed

The Speaker initially asked the Sergeant at Arms to remove Edghill but they were unable to do so. As such, the police were called him.

Edghill described the move as “political victimization.” The Speaker has since suspended the House until the order to remove Edghill is carried out.

Commander of ‘A’ Division, Marlon Chapman is at the Parliament Buildings, assisting with the removal of the Parliamentarian.

Edghill remains surrounded by his colleagues, who are singing songs of ‘democracy and human rights.’

Op-Ed: THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION DESERVES REBUKE – HER PARLIAMENTARY REMARKS WERE RACIST

President David Granger must rebuke Nicolette Henry, the Minister of Education. In fact, Ms. Henry ought to be dismissed as Minister of Education.

The President has to ensure his Ministers understand they are Ministers serving ALL the people of Guyana and not only some of the people. Her recent remarks during the BUDGET 2018 debate insulted Indo-Guyanese and HINDUS and, indeed, all of Guyana. But not only Ms. Henry, all her colleagues should be sanctioned because they lustily cheered her on during her vile remarks.

When Ms. Henry stated “I am not a Chattri so I cannot be expected to know the difference between Phagwah and Diwali”, she crossed the line and disqualified herself as a Minister. Her remarks were distinctly and unequivocally racist, no need to sugar-coat it. Phagwah and Diwali are National Holidays in Guyana. Every citizen knows this. Certainly, a Minister of Government is expected to know this. Even if everyone is not expected to know the full religious significance of Phagwah and Diwali, we each must know that these are different national holidays, holidays for all, not only for Hindus or Indo-Guyanese.

Ms. Henry clearly equated “Chattri” with being Indo-Guyanese and being Hindu. The fact is that not every Indo-Guyanese is a Hindu, not every Hindu is a “Chattri” and there are also Afro-Guyanese, Amerindians and people of other races who are Hindus. Ms. Henry who was the Minister of Culture when she did not know the difference between Phagwah and Diwali, in effect, was arguing that she has no obligation to know when we celebrate Phagwah and Diwali because she is not an Indo-Guyanese.

If she believes it is below her standing as an Afro-Guyanese to know that these are distinct holidays, she may be within her right. But she is a Minister serving the Guyanese people and, therefore, has an obligation to know that these are different holidays. She has no choice in the matter; it is her obligation to know the difference between the holidays. To so vulgarly separate herself from Hindus and Indo-Guyanese, she clearly sent a repugnant message that she has no desire to serve them. President Granger, then, must dismiss her.
Unfortunately, such repugnant behavior, far from being rebuked, is often encouraged and necessary for gaining stripes within the PNC/APNU/AFC. In fact, the more repugnant their behavior is, the faster they gain ascendency in the ranks. This is why Minister Broomes behave the way she does. This is why Minister Lawrence walks into Parliament treating MP Damon as an animal, offering him grass to feed on. This is why a certain Minister arranged for a staff member to breach security and present herself as an “imposter Claus” to disrupt and threaten the Leader of the Opposition during his closing address on BUDGET 2018.

When as Minister of Culture in March this year, during the celebration of Phagwah, Ms. Henry wished people “Happy Diwali”, I was one of the persons giving her the benefit of the doubt that she simply misspoke. While there were criticism from several quarters, most people adopted a generous stance, ignoring the gaffe and even accepting she made an innocent mistake. Our generous stance was in spite of the fact that the speech was identical to the written text, showing that it was not a simple mistake. It revealed that she and her staff genuinely did not discern the difference. Instead of her at that time apologizing for the misstatement, she ignored all calls for an apology, displaying arrogance, instead of humility, squandering an opportunity to claim an unfortunate mistake.

Her clumsy and vulgar remarks in Parliament last week are ample evidence that Ms. Henry remains steadfastly unapologetic and arrogantly believes she has no obligation to know the difference between the two holidays. Her position, in he own words, is that these are Hindu and Indo-Guyanese holidays and she has no desire nor obligation to know anything about them. She may have felt victorious as she basked in the glory of the table-thumping approval from her colleagues, but she insulted a large plurality of the Guyanese people, based on their race and religion.

Ms. Henry’s insensitive remarks add to the insecurity and marginalization Indo-Guyanese and others feel. President Granger, who refused to rebuke one of his staff for racist remarks just a few weeks ago, is now confronted with one of his Minister insulting more than 45% of the Guyanese population. If anyone is holding his or her breath that President Granger will act in the interest of the Guyanese people, I wish them luck.

Bishop Estimates

PPP/C MP dragged out of Parliament by the Police

Parliamentarians of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) were forced to stand together to resist attempts to remove their colleague Bishop Juan Edghill.

While considering the budget estimates in the National Assembly, Bishop Edghill was ordered to leave the Chambers by the Speaker of the National Assembly Dr. Barton Scotland. At the time, PPP/C MP, Bishop Edghill was on the floor highlighting the fact that Ministers were not answering questions posed to them in relation to the budget estimates.

Notably, the Speaker of the National Assembly subsequently ordered the MP to leave the Chambers, when he refused the Sergeant at Arms to was ordered by the Speaker to remove him.

However, Police was called in to remove Edghill who sat firmly in his seat, surrounded by fellow Opposition Parliamentarians.

Government parliamentarians were cheering the commotion.

Edghill was eventually dragged out of the Chambers by the Police while assaulting MP Manickchand.

Teixeira demands Speaker stands down as PPP MPs claim “Police assault” during move to remove Edghill

While all of that was taking place, Government Members had already left the Chambers. Minister of Natural Resources and former Speaker Raphael Trotman approached the PPP MPs, in an effort to offer some mediation between them and the Speaker.

Teixeira demands Speaker stands down as PPP MPs claim “Police assault” during move to remove Edghill

As the National Assembly’s Committee of Supplies descended into chaos following the refusal by Opposition Member of Parliament Bishop Juan Edghill to  leave the Chamber on the order of the Speaker,  PPP Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira believes the Speaker should stand down from that position and allow the work of the Committee and the Assembly to move forward.

As the Parliamentary Office called in the Police for assistance to get Mr. Edghill to leave the Chamber, the PPP Members of Parliament formed a human circle around him and started to sing “We Shall Overcome”.

Police ranks moved in and were shoved and pushed back by the PPP MPs.  One rank had his shirt ripped apart as A’ Division Commander, Marlon Chapman moved in and withdrew his ranks.

It was at that stage that a tearful PPP Member of Parliament, Priya Manickchand came forward saying that she had been shoved to the chest by the Police.  Through tears, Ms. Manickachand claimed that her chest must be “black and blue” from what she called the “assault by the Police”.

She said the Police still cannot say who was the person dressed as Santa Claus and turned up in Parliament last week during the Opposition Leader’s speech, but the Force was somehow quick in its response to ensure the Speaker’s orders.

While all of that was taking place, Government Members had already left the Chambers. Minister of Natural Resources and former Speaker Raphael Trotman approached the PPP MPs, in an effort to offer some mediation between them and the Speaker.

“Tell him to stand down”, PPP Chief Whip Gail Teixeira said, as she complained that the Speaker is biased against the PPP and was refusing to offer the party more time to question Government members about the budget estimates and allocations.

Speaker Scotland earlier this afternoon ordered the PPP Member Bishop Edghill out of the Chamber after declaring that he was out of order with his decision to refuse the Speaker’s order to take his seat and allow the Committee to move on with its work.

Edghill shouted that he did not mind being out of order.

This happens every time when Guyana has a Black PNC President. It quickly turns into a brutal dictatorship. We saw that from Burnham to Hoye and now under Granger.

We would have seen GT up in flames if this happened to a Afro PNC MP.

Please wipe your tears Sister Priya, we have walked down this road before and we shall overcome. All scriptures inform us that evil will not last and they will pay for every single drop of tear that you weep.

They are a bunch of thieves, crooks, criminals and dictatorship flows in their veins.

We shall overcome. This video must be shown across the world.

This is just the beginning on the assault on democracy, more is yet to come as a ruthless dictatorship takes hold.

I hope all who read this thread would finally come to your senses of what's going on in Guyana today, in the people's house under the direction of the speaker, and a government that fully supported him.

Brother Prash was correct. We all got it wrong.

They will not rest until they wipe us out and remove us from Parliament in order for the PNC flag to fly everywhere across Guyana. Where is Moses and Ramjattan ?

The police has no right being in the People's House and then to assault a MP is a violation of all democratic principles. This is just a sign of what is yet to come under this emerging Brutal AFC/PNC dictatorship.

Cheddi and Janet must be turning in their graves. I am certain that Joey is celebrating.

Funny, I bought "The West on Trial" a few days ago. I wanted to read it again after reading it many years ago in High School. They are on trial again.

I heard mention of "rape, rape" when the police were trying to remove MP Edghill. The media was present and that language is used to discredit the police for doing their job. That was out of order. In Priya's case, she may be genuinely hurt by being in the way of the commotion, but if she cried to make believed that she fell victim of police brutality, we will know the truth in days to come.

This move by the police is a serious matter and it going memories for all of us who fought against the PNC dictatorship. I am not a supporter of any political party in Guyana, but this desecration of parliament by the police must be condemned. Peaceful protest in the parliament that threatened no one should not result in the police being called in to forceable remove a member of a Parliament, and resulting in the assault of a female member of parliament Scotland must be forced out of vexing the Speaker!

But when things like this and other previous things tthat happened and when we remember how the PNC created a dictatorship during the Burnham years, it forces us at this age in our lives to resume the struggle, to make hard political and personal choices.

Time for countrywide demonstrations and to alert the International Community.  The Best in the PPP are seen in the pictures being harassed by the Police to drive fear in them. Frank Anthony and Priya Manickchand are both Presidential material. PNC thieves turning to assault folks now.

alena06

This is just the beginning of PNC hooliganism. It will progress and reach its zenith on election day in 2020.  The Guyanese people who voted for the coalition, especially those who voted AFC, are now shocked to see the real colors of these people.  This is not change.  This is retrogression to Burnhamism.  Guyana is already on a tyrannical path with Granger at the helm. This man believe in the use of violence and he will continue to use violence against his opponents and the people of Guyana.
