WE all agree that the Son Chapman incident was a very tragic one. I am glad that after 49 years, the sad story has been brought to the knowledge of the public, especially the younger people who seem not to have even heard of it.
Reading about the Son Chapman tragedy brings to mind a few other more devastating incidents which all took place during that time. About two months prior to the blowing up of the Son Chapman was the Wismar/Mackenzie upheaval
which was well organised and executed and led by an evil-minded group of people who, for no apparent reason, started burning houses, businesses and attacking people physically and raping any woman of one particular race.
I well remember a young girl testifying that she was raped by a gang of men and she did not even know how many men did it to her.
This behaviour is outrageous and inhumane and could only have been motivated and executed by people who were under the control of Satan. We all know Satan comes to steal, kill and destroy. After the sinking of the Son Chapman, groups of men went back to Wismar and brutally slaughtered every person of a certain racial group who were bold enough to have stayed on in Wismar.
Most of the demonstrators were said to have been brought from East and West Coast Demerara to carry out this business.
I sometimes wonder what is the aim of Satan to bring about this division and hatred among the people of this country? Does he want this country to consist of his followers only, and Guyana to be just one people, all controlled and governed by him?
This hatred and violence towards one another still go on today. How can we change the hearts of our people who are being led by hatred and unforgiveness for their fellow human beings? The answer to all this is that the God-fearing people should turn to God and seek the all powerful and almighty God.
God alone can cast out the evil and bring about peace and harmony among the Guyanese people.
