“Each body bore a single gunshot wound,” Police headquarters stated on Friday afternoon.

The men have been identified as Pawan Chandradeo, 37, called “Suresh” and “Jug Up”; his son Jaikarran Chandradeo, 16, called “Kevin”, and his brother-in-law Naresh Rooplall, 35, called “Teeka Bai” and “Mice.”
They were last alive seen on Thursday afternoon at about 15:00h, along with Pawan Chandradeo’s 13-year-old son Alvin, when they left their Lot 163 Mibicuri North home for a fishing trip.

The men were all found lying on the ground. The youngest was found next to his father. He had a gaping hole to the back of his head and a “salt bag” with fish and fishing net strung around his neck.

Rooplall’s body had a hole in the neck and the fishing net was strung over his shoulder. On the ground were the Hassars they had caught, littered with blood and other body matter.

The young Alvin — Chandradeo’s second child — said they had left to go at the creek to catch Hassar, and when they reached the irrigation sluice, his father asked him to wait, since they had a bit more distance to go. The sluice has a security post, and it was thought that Alvin would be safe there, perhaps for just a few hours,
until they returned. They had all planned to spend the night in the backdam, and return home early the next morning.

Hours upon hours passed without any sighting of the trio; and at about 22:00h, young Alvin heard what appeared to be a gunshot, followed a few minutes later by a few more; but he thought nothing of it.

He said he remained at the said spot and slept until Friday morning. When he woke up and realized that his father, brother and uncle had not returned, he went in search of them.
He said he looked for a few hours, but after not locating them, he decided to walk back home to inform his mother.

Chandradeo’s wife, Pam, said when her son came home and told her he could not find the others, she was not too worried, since she knew the distance was quite a bit to get out.
Mrs Chandradeo, who works as a security guard at the Mibicuri Hospital, said she later received a call from a friend who had heard of a shooting and wanted to make sure that it was not any of those who had gone to the backdam. Later, another friend called to tell her that her husband and the others had been shot.

Mrs Chandradeo said she learnt that the Police were heading into the area by boat, and she asked her father to accompany them. From the backdam, Mrs Chandradeo’s father called to relate the dreadful news. She collapsed, and had to be taken to the hospital.

The of aresh Rooplall mother, Shoba Devi Luckicharan, is struggling to come to grips with the motive behind the barbaric act.

“I don’t understand why they were killed so violently… Why them had to kill them?”
Rooplall, a security guard at Skeldon Sugar Estate, resided at #73 Village, Corentyne. This was his first fishing trip to the backdam, since he had been on one week’s leave and had decided to visit his sister in Mibicuri. He leaves to mourn his pregnant wife and an eleven-month-old baby.

Charandeo was a rice farmer and a father of four. His teenage son who was gunned down alongside him worked in the rice fields with him.

Only a month ago, Chandradeo renewed his vows with Pam, his wife of sixteen years, following a brief separation. Apart from Alvin, he leaves to mourn another son, aged 11, and a 9-year-old daughter.

The incident sent shockwaves in the usually quiet farming community. Police Divisional Commander in Berbice, Ian Amsterdam, confirmed that several persons were held for questioning and released, while one person is still in custody assisting with investigations.

By Nafeeza Yahya

THE Berbice police are now questioning three persons as they probe the gruesome murders of three men along a dam at Black Bush Polder. The bodies of Pawan Chandradeo, 37, called “Suresh” and “Jug Up”; his son Jaikarran Chandradeo, 16, called “Kevin”, and his brother-in-law Naresh Rooplall, 35, called “Teeka Bai” and “Mice” were discovered in the Cokrite Creek Savannah on Friday morning by farmers heading to their farms.PAGE-1-pics-
The police had detained a popular rice farmer who has properties close to where the men were found dead, but he was subsequently released. However, one of his workmen is still being held for questioning.

According to police sources, the man was seen with the victims earlier in the day while in the backlands.

The source also confirmed that two security guards who were stationed at the sluice where Alvin Pawan’s 13-year-old son was told to wait are in custody. They were reportedly overheard saying “like them boys shoot them man at the back” when what appeared to be gunshots were heard.

The father and son had a single gunshot wound to their heads, while Rooplall had a gunshot wound to his neck.

As word spread of the triple homicide, persons have been flocking to the Chandradeo’s home to express sympathy to the family and friends of the deceased.

When this newspaper visited the home Saturday, high- ranking members of the opposition were present to offer their condolences and support to the surviving wife and children of the victims.

Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo expressed sympathy via telephone to Pam, the wife of Pawan Chandradeo.

AT the home, parliamentarian Zulfikar Mustapha condemned the act and urged the residents to be supportive of the police as they continue their investigations to bring those responsible to justice.

Chandradeo and his family were well respected in the community for their stance against violence.

Several persons described him as being a very reliable, hardworking family man, who was well-mannered and is usually the one to prevent fights whenever he is around.

As such, the nature of his death has shocked many, as questions surround the motive for the murders.

Fazal, who lives a few houses away from the Chandradeos, wants the police to be vigilant in their approach and put those responsible behind bars so that the community can feel safer
again.

Parliamentarian Zulfikar Mustapha listens to Pam Chandradeo, who lost her husband and son. Seated next to Mrs Chandradeo is acting Region Six Chairman Denis DeRoop, who engages NDC chairman Thakoor Singh (seated) and Mrs Chandradeo’s father

“Them [Chandradeo and his son] never troubled anyone. He was always with his family or at work. I don’t know why someone would want to kill him. Let the police find those responsible quick, lock them up, so the people can feel safe again. ”

Another man, Vicky Singh, 32, said he had known Pawan Chandradeo all his life and would work with him from time to time in the rice fields. He said he never knew him to be someone to have trouble with anyone.

“I know him since I was a boy. I have never seen him in a fight. Whenever people got involved in fights or argued, he always tried to make peace.”

The three men, along with Pawan’s 13-year-old son Alvin Chandradeo had left their home at approximately 15:00 hrs. on Wednesday afternoon to go on a fishing trip in the backlands.

The young Alvin — Chandradeo’s second child — said they had left for the creek to catch Hassar, and when they reached the irrigation sluice, his father asked him to wait, since they had a bit more distance to go.

The sluice has a security post, and it was thought that Alvin would be safe there, perhaps for just a few hours, until they returned.

Charandeo was a rice farmer and a father of four. His teenage son who was gunned down alongside him worked in the rice fields with him.

Only a month ago, Chandradeo renewed his vows with Pam, his wife of 16 years, following a brief separation. Apart from Alvin, he leaves to mourn another son, aged 11, and a nine-year-old daughter.

His parting words to his daughter Rea were: “Me guh come back and we gon cook hassar and eat.”

A pregnant Tejwattie Rooplall, the wife of Naresh Rooplall, said they had been married for only a year and a half. Rooplall is five months pregnant. The couple’s first child, a daughter, is 11months old.

She is at a loss as to what will become of her and her family, since he was the only breadwinner for the family.

The Rooplall and Chandradeo families have both lost their breadwinners and are left with many unanswered questions.

Pam Chandradeo said the incident has left her family devastated and at a loss.

“They killed my husband, son and brother worse than criminals. They didn’t deserve this; they never troubled anyone, they never hurt anyone.”

Prime’ suspects in Corentyne triple murder held

Police yesterday arrested seven more persons in connection with last week’s shocking triple murder at Black Bush Polder including two prime suspects.

A police source told Stabroek News that after intense questioning, the men in custody started pointing fingers at two men, who are now considered the main suspects in the case.

According to a source, the police are working on a theory that the victims may have been mistaken for rogue fishermen who on their trips into the backdam would damage rice farmers’ fences, causing cattle to destroy the crops. The source said that these specific fishermen had been warned not to fish in the area and the victims were likely mistaken for them.

Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam told Stabroek News that they believe they are on the right track. “We feel that we have the correct persons in custody,” he said. Amsterdam emphasised that the men are still being questioned and said the police are working towards a possible confession.

According to information gathered, the men who have been arrested were working in the vicinity of where the crime was committed and have rice farms there. They are said to live in and around Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder.

Rice farmer Pawan Chandradeo, 37, his son Jaikarran Chandradeo, 15, and his brother-in-law Naresh Rooplall, 33, were found dead less than a day after they had left to go on a fishing trip in the Black Bush Polder, Corentyne community. The three were found with one gunshot wound each at Kokerite Savannah, Mibicuri Creek on Friday. Autopsies on the bodies are expected to be done today.

Bullet-riddled bodies at Berbice…Extra-marital affair possible motive; Major crimes sleuths join probe

Could an irate husband who was incensed over an extra-marital affair have orchestrated last Friday’s brutal killing of a teenage boy and two men in the Corentyne?

Divisional Commander Ian Amsterdam interacting with Indrawattie Chandradeo.

That is one of the leads detectives were following up last night, as they continued investigations into the slaying of Pawan Chandradeo, Naresh Rooplall and Jaikarran Chandradeo, whose bullet-riddled corpses were found last Friday in the backdam at Mibicuri, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne.
Kaieteur News understands that investigators are paying a keen interest in one of the detained men, after being informed that a relative of the suspect was having an affair with one of the slain men.
Detectives have been told that this individual had invited the trio to go on the ill-fated fishing trip, but had later left them.
There are reports that he had complained about mosquitoes and had left.
“Information received stated that one of the men in custody who invited the victims on the fishing trip was with them at the time of the incident but alleges that he left for the Koker and left the victims alive.
His story was later confirmed by one of the security guards at the Koker.
According to a police source, it was later learnt that Rooplall’s wife and the aforementioned suspect previously shared a relationship.
Police have detained at least nine people, including a rice farmer and some of his workers. Commander of ‘B’ Division Ian Amsterdam yesterday again expressed confidence of a breakthrough.
“We are learning that a number of persons played a role in the incident but we have no concrete suspect as yet. The police are working around the clock trying to put the pieces together to quickly bring the killers to justice. What we have right now are persons who would have the opportunity to commit the act.”
According to Commander Amsterdam, results of the post mortem conducted yesterday by Government Pathologist, Dr. Vivekanand Brijmohan revealed that 15-year-old Jaikarran Chandradeo called ‘Kevin’ of Mibicuri North and 33-year-old Naresh Rooplall called ‘Ticka Bai’ of No. 77 Village, Corentyne died from shock and haemorrhage, while 37-year-old Pawan Chandradeo, called ‘Suresh’ of Lot 163 Mibicuri, BBP died of shock and haemorrhage, lacerations to the brain and a fractured skull.
Amsterdam also stated that the men in custody are not licensed firearm holders. He said this suggested that the murder weapon may be an unlicensed firearm.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum disclosed yesterday that ranks from the Major Crimes Unit have joined investigators at ‘B’ Division.
The bodies of Chandradeo, Rooplall and Chandradeo, were found around 09.00 hrs on Friday.
The slain teen still had a bag with fish slung around his shoulder.
The corpses bore gaping shotgun wounds to their heads and upper bodies.
Three shotgun cartridges were found near the bodies. Investigators are trying to ascertain whether any of the detained individuals own a shotgun.
According to reports, the victims were found by Sudama Jagmohan, a rice farmer of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder and his workmen.
According to Jagmohan, he was on his way to his rice field at Cookrite area where he also has hassars.
Jaghoman said that on their way to his farm, the group found the bodies lying on a dam in his rice-land.
He immediately called a neighbour who informed the police.
According to reports, 13-year old Alvin Chanderdeo, who had gone with the others, was left at a pump station on a dam, as the others went further into the savannahs to fish.
The lad stayed at the pump station from where he reportedly heard gunshots.

He relayed that the shotgun was taken and sent to Georgetown for ballistics testing.
