Buxton and Plaisance market tarmacs handed over

Minister in the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Norman Whittaker handed over today, market tarmacs at Plaisance and Buxton, East Coast Demerara to the respective Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) in the presence of vendors and residents of the areas.

 

Minister Whittaker explained that the opening of the new stalls on the tarmacs will not only allow the consumers to access the market easily but, will also create job opportunities for persons.

  
β€œThere will be approximately 318 stalls but that doesn’t mean that there will be just 318 vendors, there will be more,” added Mr. Whittaker told the gathering at Plaisance.

He said he is aware of the unhealthy environment that the vendors were dwelling in because of the stalls being erected on the road side. NDC officials will be visiting the market area frequently to ensure the area is being kept in a healthy manner so that the customers will be able to buy their goods knowing that it is healthy for them as well.

 

The Minister later explained that apart from rates and taxes, the NDCs are expected to garner additional funds from other sources.  Using the market tarmacs for other activities will be a way of getting these supplementary funds that are to be deposited into a special account for maintenance and other purposes.

Mr. Whittaker mentioned that the vendors are urged to utilise their stalls since other persons can have the opportunity to do so if they are not being put to use.  He added that the tarmacs will be used in the day for marketing and in the night for social activities or games.

 

The villagers of the two areas said they were happy because they know that it will help in the development of not only the market area but, also the village.

 

Today also, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Ganga Persaud handed over the Diamond tarmac to the area’s NDC.

 

On Friday, the NDCs of Best Klien /Pouderoyen and Toevlugt/Patentia received the documents of market tarmacs in Pouderoyen and Patentia, West Bank Demerara, Region Three.

 

Tomorrow, the tarmac at Charity, Region Two will be officially handed over.
