Caesar, Phillips capture 200m but Police Progressive Youth claim National Senior C/ships

Compton Caesar of Christianburg Wismar Secondary (CWS) and Kenisha Phillips of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) captured the male and female 200m respectively, but Police Progressive Youth Club (PPYC) emerged champions of the Guyana National Seniors track and field championships which concluded yesterday at the Leonora Track and Field Stadium, West Coast Demerara.
PPYC chalked up 376 points, while their closest rival, GDF, finished with 269. Running Brave was third on 129 followed by CWS 99, Upper Demerara Schools 44, De Challengers 16, Hopetown Flames SC five and Rurallities Athletic Club three.
PPYC captured seven gold medals, 14 silver and 17 bronze, while GDF picked up 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Running Brave claimed seven gold and five silver, CWS ended with three gold, three silver and two bronze, Upper Demerara Schools had three gold, one silver and one bronze, while DeChallengers had two bronze.
Caesar who had a wind point of 2.8, added to his collection of prizes, winning the 200m in 21.28 seconds ahead of Emmanuel Archibald of PPY 21.36 and Daniel Williams of Upper Demerara 21.59. Caesar capped a memorable two days after taking the 100m on opening day, Sunday.
Phillips, with 3.4 wind point thrilled the fans as she won the 200m in 24.07 ahead of Alita Moore of PPYC 24.55 and Onassha Rogers of CWS 24.63.
Samuel Lynch of Running Brave, edged Quacy Morian of PPYC to win the male 800m in 1:54.21, while Morian finished in 1:54.42; Anfernee Headecker of GDF placed third in 1:56.42.
Hosea Glen of CWS claimed the male 110m hurdles in 18.23 seconds, while his team-mate Shimar Velloza took silver in 20.32, Marvin Tinnis of PPYC was third in 20.61.
Joanna Archer of PPYC took gold in the female 800m in 2:14.55, while Claudrice McKoy of Running Brave was second on 2:15.36, Kezra Murray of PPYC finished third in 2:22.45.
Natrina Hooper of Running Brave leaped 1.70m to take the top podium spot in the female high jump, Cindy Fraser of PPYC finished second with 1.60m and Shontel Browne of GDF was third with 1.45m.
South American Youth Gold medalist Chantoba Bright of Upper Demerara won the female triple jump with 12.24m ahead of Cindy Fraser of PPYC 10.71.
Tenesha Cort of GDF claimed gold in the female discuss throw with 35.03m, Sophina Vanderstoop of PPYC placed second with 33.48m and Annesia DeAbreau of PPYC finished third with 31.97m.
Cleveland Thomas of Running Brave won the male 5000m in 16:24.44, Jonathan Fagundes of PPYC was second in 17:27.95 and Calvin Thomas ended in third position in 19:26.42.
The male triple jump was taken by Lloyd McCurdy of GDF with a leap of 15.67m, his team mate Lurex Stewart grabbed silver with 14.76m and Dennis Roberts of PPYC took bronze in 14.00m.
The male shot put went to Osafo DoSantos of GDF 13.38m, Selwin Henry of GDF finished second with 13.38m and Kleon Spellen 12.92m of PPYC placed third.
Tariq Boyce captured the male high jump, while Leslain Baird won the javelin; he erased his previous best of 73.46cm which was the national record.
