My wife & I left Guyana 24 yrs & 30 years ago respectively we never went back until May of this year. We both enjoyed our stay & would like to visit there again but this time we'd like to go into the interior rather than staying in the city. I found G/town to be a lot safer than when I left in '73 I also noticed that a lot of homes were quite large .
The people there are not sitting on their tushes, they're opening small businesses under their houses or whatever space they could find. I was also impressed to find that almost everything could be found in the stores, unlike when things were banned around the time that I left there.
The roads were a bit of a disgrace they're in need of repair, another thing that I noticed was the fact that no street lights have been replaced since I left Guyana, consequently they all walk around in darkness. Motor cycles, bicycles, donkey carts, all move around without any lights on their vehicles,it's a wonder the accident rate is not higher than we were told. The mosquitoes were mean to us (they really love foreign blood) the best thing we found for keeping them away was "Off Skintastic" by Johnson & Johnson, this smelled a lot better than the regular "Off, also, "Skin so soft" by Avon works well.
While there, we had blackouts at least twice a week & the water pressure was never as I remembered it, instead we had trickles off water, but I must say that it was the first time in years that my skin felt soft due to the difference in the water. I was also very impressed with the taxi driver that we were introduced to by my family there. This young fellow had an older vehicle but when it came down to punctuality, this guy gets the vote.
For anyone planning a visit there & looking for a vehicle to pick u up,his phone# 592-065-3205. Keith Persaud. The only trouble with my trip was on the way out, we had to pay the exit tax but we were not told that Cdn currency was not accepted & we had a heck of a time at the airport. I think that some of the airport workers should be taught the proper way to welcome visitors & how to say goodbye, which would have made the trip all the more enjoyable. I an happy to have made the trip there but I'm also much happier to get back to my home here in Canada, I guess that I now know that Guyana is in my heart but Canada is my home.
