"Deep in the heart of the Amazonian forest, the Barima River factory will celebrate in 2017 thirty years of providing  a livelihood for neighbouring communities. With 85 direct employees and some 200 free lance pickers in 2016, the production of heart of palm is more than ever a major activity in this remote region of Guyana. It represents millions of Guyana Dollars poured every year into the local economy through purchasing of raw material, salaries and indirect expenses."

This is a terrible industry devastating palm trees and riparian ecology every where on the coast. The idea of Amerindians not able to restrict them from harvesting the palm trees even on their lands is also terrible. It kills the trees.

It also pays the workers little and often they owe the company more than they earn given they are supplied with basic necessities by the company as advances. One report out there was they some time paid with cigarettes. It is also a tall tale that guyana gets much from this. It loses more than it gains. One can see its effect in the almost universal scarcity of tibisiri, in guyana.
