Manager of the Guyana Team that would be hunting for medals at this year’s Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships here in Barbados, Steve Ramshuchit, is of the view that his charges have a chance to finish on the podium just like any other country represented here in the Land of the Flying Fish.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport last night from the team hotel, Tropical Winds in St. Phillips, Ramshuchit noted that once the riders stick to team plans and execute as they have discussed, Guyana will do well.
”Our guys are all in good shape and they have been competing consistently during this ongoing season. They have all held their own at the national championships and are all eager to do well for themselves and country.
One challenge might be the steep climbs along the course but even with such a challenge, I am of the firm view that we will hold our own and compete with the rest of the Caribbean members here.”
Kaieteur Sport understands that close to a dozen countries will be facing starters orders and only three (3) females would be in contention.
Fourteen year-old Jonathan Ramshuchit will be contesting the Juvenile Time Trials today as will Junior’s, Curtis Dey and Briton John.
As is the norm at these championships, the other nations will be looking strongly at the Guyanese riders despite the fact that they are all making their respective debuts at this level.
Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) President Horace Burrowes who is also in Barbados to lend support commented: “I am really, really proud of these guys and the fact that the respective clubs would have been able to step up and ensure they are here.
The federation has been doing its best to get top quality exposure for these talented lads and will continue to do so. Like the Manager, I am also confident that we will do very well this year.”
Burrowes also extended gratitude to all the parents of the riders who also played their part in ensuring that they allowed them to compete not only here but all through the season.
Race time today is 08:00hrs, while the Road Race tomorrow will also pedal off at 08:00hrs when all five cyclists will be in action.
