CCJ expected to issue order tomorrow stopping GECOM from declaring elections results
The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is expected to no later than tomorrow, Wednesday June 23, 2020 issue a stay order which will stop the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) from declaring the results of the March 02, 2020 elections, until it hears an appeal filed by PPP/C top brass against a majority ruling of the Court of Appeal with regards to an interpretation of the Constitution.
The Court of Appeal held it had jurisdiction to hear a case filed by an affiliate of the government which sought to block the declaration of a winner of the March 02, 2020 elections.
The Court of Appeal ruled that pursuant to Article 177 (4) of the Constitution it had jurisdiction to hear the case, in so far, as to grant an Order for the interpretation of the words βmore votes castβ contained in Article 172 (b) of the Constitution to mean βmore valid votes cast.β
Among other things, the PPP/C is contending that the Court of Appeal fell into grave constitutional error in its ruling, and has moved to the CCJ to have it overturned.
