CGX semi-submersible rig arrives, drilling to commence in weeks - CEO, other officials meet President

President and Chief Executive Officer of CGX Stephen Hermestone meeting President Donald Ramotar

The way has been cleared for the Canadian oil exploration company, CGX to commence drilling one of two wells in the Guyana offshore concession with the arrival on Sunday of the Ocean Saragoga, a semi-submersible drilling rig.

President and Chief Executive Officer of the petroleum exploration company Stephen Hermestone made the disclosure after meeting President Donald Ramotar in the company of Vice President Dewi Jones and Chief Operating Officer Michael Stockinger.

Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Robert Persaud and Head of the Petroleum Division of the Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Noel Dennison were also part of the meeting.

The Ocean Saratoga rig departed the Gulf of Mexico on January 1, en-route to Guyana’s territorial waters, and on its way sojourned in neighbouring Trinidad and Tobago for refuelling.

Hermestone told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that anchor lines were secured immediately after arrival and that drilling would be the next major operation.

The President and CEO of the company said he is hopeful of a good and safe operation and spoke with confidence about the cadre of operators conducting the drilling

“We’ll see what the well results show us… we hope to find the oil … you always plan for success,” Hermestone said.

Drilling of the Eagle Well will endure a 60-day period and 180 days for the Jaguar well. The latter is being pursued through a joint venture operation among CGX, Repsol a Spanish company, Tullow Oil of London and YPF.

CGX recently announced that Guyanese born Professor Suresh Narine and acclaimed Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST) Dr. Suresh Narine has been appointed on the board of directors for CGX Energy Incorporated.

He had expressed gratitude for the appointment and spoke of some of the benefits of Guyana as an oil producing economy against that of a fuel importer.

Recently CGX announced that the 1,160 square kilometre 3D marine seismic contract that was publicised in December was completed.

Hermeston had reported that, “The seismic data is expected to provide better imaging of the up-dip limits of the Eagle Deep stratigraphic play at the Turonian and Campanian and has provided us with the first 3D seismic coverage on our two early Cretaceous, Albian prospects (Crabwood and Kabukalli) which are underlying the Company’s 100% owned Corentyne offshore Petroleum Prospecting License (PPL). Fast track processing and interpretation of the data will commence on the Albian prospects and will be followed by processing, interpretation and compilation of the Eagle deep Turonian and Campanian prospects.”

Guyana is the second most attractive under-explored basin in the world with a potential of 15.2 billion barrels of oil. If oil is to be found, production targets would be estimated at 50 million barrels per year.

President Ramotar has been keeping abreast with activities in the oil and gas sector and in the past week has met some of the main companies involved in offshore drilling, including Repsol, and Exxon Mobile.

Anadarko, America’s largest independent oil and gas company has signalled to the Guyana Government, its interest in an offshore concession as it sees the South American country as one with a great deal of promise in the oil and gas industry.

Last September Vice President, Business Development of Anadarko, Ian J. Cooling had met former President Bharrat Jagdeo with the proposal and on January 17 this year International Business Developer of the company Richard Lapin met Guyana’s new president with the same proposal.

A US based Petroleum Company Prime Energy LLC- Caribbean proposed last year to construct a modular mini refinery on the local shores with a capacity to hold 20,000 barrels daily.

Starting tomorrow opposition leader David Granger, power hungry Speaker Raphael Trotman and thousands of PNC supporters, including GNIers like caribj and Nuff will be conducting a 6 month voodoo fest---there will be lots of abracadabra, black magic and devilry--hoping and praying for oil not be be discovered in commercial quantities in Guyana.

You see folks:

GOOD NEWS FOR GUYANA = BAD NEWS FOR THE PNC AND THEIR SUPPORTERS.

Simple matter.

It was known for years and years and years that oil existed in Guyana.

Unfortunately, the powers-to-be at the time prevented large scale explorations.

Now, times have changed.

Yep! The oil was always there.

But keep in mind that from 1992 to 2000 oil price ranged from $13 to $25 dollars a barrel----so it may not have been financially feasible to explore in Guyana.

Today oil closed at $98.90 a barrel---Also, the technology has improved vastly---so the oil resources in Guyana can be tapped.

What's your point?

The US wants to wean its self off Middle East oil as much as possible. Additional supply from another country will help this effort.

Oil reserves in Guyana could have been tapped a very long time go and cost today is not the reason/factor.

Certain industrial countries, for political and other reasons, prevented the oil activities for Guyana's development.

There is where the stupidity lies. Royalties are a mere fraction of the sales profit. In Suriname they sell the oil. In Guyana they want to go for royalties. Like we got some relaly dumb economists in the PPP government. The gold and other exports are bringing in peanuts in royalties.
Mr.T
We don't have the money to invest in equipment so we have no choice but to go for royalties. Suriname gets a billion dollars every year from Holland. All we got from the British is a kick to the ass and a non- invite to the Royal wedding for our head of state.

Stop fabricating rubbish. Suriname doesn't get a penny from Holland. What Suriname does have is the willingness to be self reliant on being able to get local jobs done by local people.

They have been mining gold in Guyana with bare hands for centuries. So the excuse about lack of equipment in that sector is rather lame.
As for the oil: how are we going to be big players when we can't figure out how to provide jobs for the locals in the future labour market?

Drill baby drill. A lot of AFC members who need jobs since their failed election bid will now find jobs.

Freddie can also get a job.

Oil will bring tremendous prosperity for all Guyanese. PPP has always been a government of progress.

PNC made Guyanese line up for food, we had no drinking water, no electricity, NO GAS, PNC thugs took bribes for everything, elections were rigged. PNC Thieves and kick down the door bandits were everywhere.

We had a donkey cart economy under the PNC. Guyana is now progressing under PPP. Jagdeo was not perfect, but we still made tremendous progress.

And by the way, thanks to President Jagdeo, PNC terrorists were removed and thanks to Brother Gajraj our streets are safe from PNC backed criminals.
