Children’s dance competition brings fairy-tales and religion to center stage

The stage of the National Cultural Centre (NCC)was beset with dance moves as the Education Ministry’s Children’s Mash competition continued today with dance pieces by nursery and primary school students. The competition is being celebrated under this year’s Mashramani theme “Mashing with pride, keeping we traditions alive”.
The dancers were full of exuberance as they jumped, gyrated, pranced and flounced across the stage.
At the nursery level the categories of dance were religious beliefs, ring dance/games children’s play and fantasy while at the primary level the categories included religious beliefs, interpretative, fantasy, ring dance/games children’s play, legends and traditions, social commentary and masquerade.

Today’s competitions had the participation of schools from within the Georgetown Education district. Similar competitions are on-going throughout the country after which the top performers from each education district will compete for the top spots.

The results, which were received by loud screams and cheering by the participating schools, were delivered by the competition’s moderator Travis Chase, who at intervals kept the audience lively with renditions of “Palance”.
The St. Angela’s primary ‘ballerinas’
At the nursery level the results in the three categories are as follows: - Religious Beliefs – in first position was Green Acres; second, South Road Nursery and third was Lodge nursery school. In the Ring dance/games children’s play category, South Road secured first and Graystock nursery school was awarded the second and third positions. For the Fantasy category, Head Start Nursery was adjudged first, and Alexander Village and Lodge nursery schools in second and third positions respectively.

The primary level for the 5-7 age group results are as follows: - in the Religious Beliefs category, Sophia was first followed by St. Angela’s and St. Agnes primary schools in second and third positions respectively. For the Ring dance/games children’s play, St. Pius Primary was first. North Georgetown secured the first in the Fantasy category while Stella Maris copped second and St. Agnes primary third.

In the 8-10 age group the results are as follows: -in the Interpretative category, St. Agnes copped first with Smith’s Memorial in second position and North Georgetown primary in third spot. In Legends and traditions, Smith’s Memorial got first, St. Pius second and Winfer Gardens primary secured third spot. For the Religious beliefs category, Green Acres was adjudged first with Stella Maris copping second and St. Pius primary third.

In the social commentary and masquerade categories North Georgetown primary was the only school which presented hence they were adjudged the winner.
The competitions will continue tomorrow at the NCC with dance presentations by secondary schools in the city.
