GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – China is providing US$ eight million for the implementation of a number of projects in Guyana.

The two countries Thursday signed an economic and technical cooperation agreement with Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh praising Beijing’s efforts in the socio-economic development of his country.

Singh made specific reference to the long-standing historical friendship between the two countries, recalling that Guyana was the first Caribbean country to establish formal diplomatic relations with China following its independence.

A Government statement said that over the years, “Guyana has benefited significantly from a number of interventions from the People's Republic of China in areas such as health, trade, infrastructure, energy, mining, transport and communication, agriculture, sport and culture among others from the Technical Cooperation Agreement Grants.”

It said another gesture of the continued bilateral co-operation between the two countries resulted in China delivering last year new ferries to improve river transport between the counties of Demerara and Essequibo.

The two countries last year signed a US$130 million concessional loan agreement for the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Expansion Project that entails the construction of a new terminal building, the extension of the runway and the general enhancement of the airport facilities to accommodate larger aircraft and the increasing arrival and departure of passengers.
