China slams US as world’s biggest villain for cyber espionage

China’s official news agency has slammed the United States as the world's “biggest villain” following new revelations about Washington’s cyber espionage against Chinese companies and institutions.

“These, along with previous allegations, are clearly troubling signs. They demonstrate that the United States, which has long been trying to play innocent as a victim of cyber attacks, has turned out to be the biggest villain in our age,” said a commentary published in the Xinhua news agency on Sunday.

In his latest revelation published by the South China Morning Post on Saturday, former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor Edward Snowden said US spying agencies have been hacking Chinese phone companies in order to access millions of private text messages in China.

According to the report, the NSA has also hacked China's top Tsinghua University and Pacnet headquarters in Hong Kong, which operates one of the Asia-Pacific region's largest fiber-optic networks, by using an electronic surveillance government program known as PRISM.

“But for other countries, Washington should come clean about its record first”" the Xinhua commentary added.

“It (Washington) owes too an explanation to China and other countries it has allegedly spied on. It has to share with the world the range, extent and intent of its clandestine hacking programs.”

US federal prosecutors have filed charges of “theft of government property, unauthorized communication of national defense information and willful communication of classified communications intelligence information to an unauthorized person” against Snowden.

The charges against Snowden, who is reportedly seeking asylum in Hong Kong, were based on his extraction of classified documents from servers of the NSA, which led to revelations about the agency’s spying programs.

The documents, disclosed to the Guardian and Washington Post revealed two major NSA spying programs, one for gathering US phone records and another one, called PRISM, for tracking the use of US-based web servers by Americans and other nationals.

The leaks also exposed “Boundless Informant,” a powerful tool developed by the NSA, which enables it to record and categorize intelligence it secretly collects from countries around the world.

US has definitely been left with a big pie in the face. This administration is out of control.  Remember, we just had the engineered IRS harassment of citizens for political purposes and we just had the politically engineered statements on Benghazi.  This may explain why Obama was mentally absent during the first prezzy debate with Romney.

You're a real clown if you think that the NSA started spying during this administration's term.

No one said "started", but certainly escalated and expanded to unprecedented levels in the past few years.   If the great Bush had done half of this, you liberals would be up in arms marching and burning the stars and stripes.  Snowden is correct, who stops the next guy from going the next level.  Sooner or later we have a "Stalinist" doctrine over the USA.

We need to elect Rand Paul in 2016.

The NSA has been doing the same thing under Bush and every other president who preceded him for sixty years now. Spying. The only difference today is that the technology has changed from previous administrations. They were listening to phone calls and scanning emails in Bush's time as they do today because phones and emails were around then. If Twitter and Facebook were available in Bush's era, they would have done the same as they are doing today.

Snowden is nothing but a filthy traitor.

Do you think that other developed countries are not doing the same thing?

The NSA is not Obama. It runs with oversight of congress and has institutional longevity overarching any presidency. Echelon was designed by Poindexter. Carnivore was a Bush development and Prism is the outcome. It is what any government with intent on consolidating intelligence gathering would concern itself with in this era of fundamentalist stateless actors intending to harm its citizens.

Snowden cannot run. Russia will not keep him. He better hope there is a direct flight to Cuba and on to Ecuador. Further, presidents of Latin nations come and go. If not today tomorrow. He cannot hide.

You late, we know that.  He has not requested asylum in Russia.  Last week Putin called him a human right activist and left the door open for asylum.

The US official acted rashly calling for his head and accusing him of treason.  That politicize the entire issue.  The fact that this administration now even want to consider targeting reporters in such cases tells how far democracy has degenerated under Obama.

there is nothing rash to advertize what he is and the penalties he face. He is a traitor. The only thing degenerated under Obama is your mind. Reporters never had carte blanche to do as they please. Further, the structure of the law demanded the reporter be listed as a co conspirator. He was never the target. The leeker was.

You can say whatever you want as I am unconcerned with your delusions. Obama does not factor in my processing of the information. It is the incident itself. Congress demanded ( republicans also) that the leeks stop. If the reporter was speaking to the leeker it speaks to the issue that his phone records is of value to an investigator.

I think what he did was wrong, but lying to the senate was also wrong and some of the actions by the USG are suspect, the things that Obama spoke out against as a candidate.
