CHARTERED Accountant and AFC activist Mr Christopher Ram and newspaper publisher and businessman Mr Glenn Lall head a list of persons who have been sued by Town Clerk of the Georgetown Municipality for non-payment of rates and taxes to the tune of millions of dollars.
The proceedings were instituted yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and have all been fixed for hearing on the 24th day of October, 2013 in Court 8.
These proceedings were filed by Attorney-at-Law Sandil Kissoon of the law firm ‘Kissoon & Kissoon’. This newspaper obtained a copy of the summary of the matters filed by Kissoon, which revealed that the outstanding amount
owed by Mr Ram for properties in Waterloo Street, Georgetown totals more than $11.4M, while Mr Lall owes more than $5.6M in rates and taxes for a property in his and Bhena Lall’s name on Saffon Street, Georgetown.
The list of persons and the amount of rates and taxes owed are as follows:
** Christopher Ram, (Sublot ‘B’ of Lot 158 Waterloo Street, North Cummingsburg, and Sublots ‘C’ and ‘D’ of Lot 157 Waterloo Street, North Cummingsburg, Georgetown) - a total of $11,434,422
** Wraylite Engineering Company Ltd. (for property at Lot 1866 North Ruimveldt, Festival City, Georgetown) the sum of $21,960,397

** Wade Beckles (for property at Lot 84 Robb Street, Lacytown, Georgetown) the sum of $6,862,342
** Azamally & Sons Ltd (Lot 1/11 Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown) – the outstanding amount is $7,676,555
Commentators have expressed shock that persons like Christopher Ram and Glenn Lall who preached daily to the nation about transparency, accountability and compliance with tax and financial laws of the country, are themselves in gross violation of the very things that they preach.
Persons who spoke with the Chronicle last evening even expressed the view that persons like Ram and Lall hold themselves out to be concerned about taxpayers dollars when they themselves are not paying their lawful taxes.
These same persons are also critical of the state of the Capital city and its environs but not once did they disclose that by their nonpayment of taxes they contribute significantly to the state in which the city is in.
Only a few days ago, the Mayor of the City’s wife, Jennifer Basdeo-Green was also sued for over $10M for non-payment of rates and taxes dating back since 1997.
