Head Coach of four-time Digicel Schools Football Championship champions Christianburg / Wismar Multilateral, Delon Peters speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said they have intensified preparations ahead of their opening clash against Linden Technical Institute (LTI) on a date to be announced.
Champions for four consecutive years beginning in 2012, before following up that feat with three more titles in 2013, 2014, and 2015, Peters has been with the team since the inception of the Digicel Championship.
During that period, he has seen them make all six appearances in the final, losing to the Government Technical Institute in the event’s inaugural year and Chase Academic Foundation last year, easily the most successful record among participating teams.
Quizzed on whether they will be as strong as previous years, Peters said quite a few players will be returning and this according to him makes them competitive.
β€œWhile quite a few of them did not see much playing time last year, they were around and know how it feels to be playing on the big stage and in front of large crowds,” Peters stated.
According to the Head Coach, among the players who will be back are star striker Omar Brewley, Kevin Dare, Jumaine Kingston, Jornel Williams, Nicholas Gentle (Goalkeeper), Xavier Smith, Kevin Dornick and Carwyn Adolphus.
Asked aboput the enthusiasm among the players, Peters said that there is much hunger within the team and the new players are learning fast and clearly wants to sustain the positive legacy that the teams that came before them left.
He revealed that the turnout at practice sessions has been excellent and there is a high level of competition for places on the team, something that is creating headaches for the coaching staff.
However, he indicated that the mood is good and the players are eager to get into action and start the journey to reach the top once again.
β€œThis is a team that has got a lot at stake, first they must continue to be the best in Region 10, an achievement that was attained since the start of the championship, while they know that they have to represent Region 10 against any opposition so they are committed to doing those things,” he noted.
Peters disclosed that the school still has a lot of young exciting players and fans will get a glimpse of them as they commence the journey to bring back the championship trophy to the Mining community.
Commenting on some of the benefits derived from Digicel staging the Championship, Peters pointed to the opportunity that the players have to exhibit their skills and abilities, to interact with other players and learn about the way of life and customs in other communities and most importantly, having the chance to be spotted by scouts, coaches and club officials.
He applauded Digicel for doing it another year and urged that the Company continue to lend its support towards the development of sports and athletes locally.
