Christopher Griffith captures Tampico Juice 60-miler

The Guyana Beverage Company 60 miles Tampico Juice Open Caricom Day cycle road race lived up to expectations in some quarters. With over 55 riders taking to the starting line the event, which was organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club (FACC), was described as one of the biggest and best for the year.
With General Manager Robert Selman and other executives in attendance and following the event, it was a good opportunity for Christopher Griffith of team Evaluation to ride home first in a time of two hrs 26 minutes and 37 seconds (2:26:37), to take top honours in a ding done battle with Jamal John of Team Cocos. John suffered a mishap (slipped chain) just before the finishing line and had to settle for second place.
The cyclists were sent on their way from in front of the Company’s Berbice Office at Palmyra, East Coast, Berbice around 10:00 hrs by Selman and former Mayor and Patron of the club Errol Alphonso.
The riders quickly began to jostle for the front as they position themselves early in their quest for top honours. Various riders made a dash for the lead, but were eventually roped in by the pack as the peloton held together.
Eventually a bunch of nine made up of Griffith, John, Romello Crawford, Paul De Nobrega, Stephen Fernandes, Andrew Hicks, Raul Leal, Andre Green and Curtis Dey were able to make a getaway at Alness on the upward journey.
They distanced themselves from the pack as they headed to the turn back stage in front the No51 Police Station, before returning to finish at the place of origin.

The leading bunch was becoming loose as the grueling battle continued. It was around No47 Village that Griffith and John in a sprint for a prime prize eluded the rest of the field and kept on going as the event became a two man battle for the rest of the journey. John seemed to be getting the better of the spring home, but with about 40 meters out he suffered a slipped chained allowing Griffith to cross ahead of him.
Rounding out the top ten were De Nobrega, Hicks, Leal, Green, Dey, Fernandes Crawford and Alonzo Ambrose who rode in tenth.
Fernandes was first veterans ahead of Ian “Deaf Boy” Jackson, Jaikaran Sookhai and Everal Maundy. The first Juvenile was Zaman Khan with Ralph Seenarine and Kerwyne Collins taking the other two spots.
David Dick won among the 12-14 riders from Jonathan Ramsuchit, Cameron Yorrick and Sasenarine Bhowandin. Shanika Texeira took the female event from Deance Welch.
The 9-12 BMX Category was won by Munesh Bhowandin from Shacin Karan, Gemal Daniels and Y. Suklall, while Lomesh Singh won the 6-9 BMX event.
The Juveniles rode from Nand Persaud and Company Limited on the Corentyne. The 12-14 riders along with the females pedaled from Tain, UG Berbice Campus, while the BMX riders pedaled from the Berbice Bridge entrance.
The prime point prizes were taken by John with four, Griffith three, while there was one each for Akeem Wilkinson, Kemuel Moses and Crawford.
At the presentation ceremony that followed, Mr. Selman, who was accompanied by Commercial Manager Samuel Arjoon and Trade and Marketing Coordinator Raymond Govinda, was a happy man. He expressed his pleasure in the turnout of riders and spectators and the way the event was conducted. He was loud in praise and congratulated the FACC Coach Randolph Roberts and the Guyana Police Force for doing a wonderful job. He reemphasized that The FACC is one of the best clubs in the country and pledged to continue supporting the organisation.
Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster also expressed words of appreciation for the GBC, Selman, the FACC and Roberts for putting on an excellent event.
Roberts thanked Mr. Selman and the GBC for being on board with them in helping to promote sports. He encouraged everyone to continue supporting the GBC and to drink TAMPICO Juice. Roberts urged others to get on board and following in the footsteps of the GBC.
Apart from receiving bottles of Tampico Juice and Oasis Purified Water, the riders received a Tampico branded T-Shirt and a case of Turbo Energy Drink.
