City Council workers’ negligence result in severe flooding in Kingston

Kingston, Georgetown residents and workers were early this morning greeted with inundation, as a result of the negligence of the city workers managing the operations of the koker in the area.
The koker attendant and foreman apparently slept away, leaving the doors of the koker opened last evening during the high tide.
Public Works Minister Robeson Benn told the Government Information Agency (GINA) that around 5:45hrs this morning he received calls that the compounds in Kingston were flooded.
The Minister said that initial efforts to contact the City Council officials for clarification proved futile, however, he indicated that later contact with the City Engineer was made and he informed him that the koker attendant and foreman slept away, leaving the koker door in the up position.
Fort Street, Kingston inundated
Their action resulted in flooding of most of Kingston, from the embankment to South Kingston, through Fort Street going across to High Street and to Eve Leary.
Particularly hard hit were those persons living in the bottom flats of buildings as their appliances and furniture were affected. The offices in the bottom flats of the Ministries and other businesses were also severely affected including their furniture, computers, air conditioners (AC) and storage rooms.
Ministry of Public Works flooded
Minister Benn said that a meeting with City Hall on the matter is scheduled for later but nothing could have been done except to await the normal run off of the water from the land when the tide falls.
After noon today the water in the compounds and on the streets had drained off.

With regards to the fate of the koker attendant and his foreman, Minister Benn said that the decision lies in the hands of the City Council.
