Rafieya Husain crowned Miss World Guyana 2014

The Miss World Guyana Pageant which was held on Independence Day at the National Cultural Centre was one of the stiffest and most controversial beauty contests that Guyanese had witnessed in awhile.

Nonetheless, the stunning Miss Rafieya Husain stole the crown with her charm. Her main competitors, Atisha Gaskill and Denicia Williams copped the first runner up and second place positions respectively. Husain will be representing Guyana later this year at the International leg of the Miss World Pageant in London.

As is now customary with any show at the Cultural Centre, the pageant was off to a late start. However, it was forgiven as the audience was treated to a unique introduction of the eight beautiful contestants; Cherese James, Rafieya Husain, Rebekah London, Atisha Gaskill, Denicia Williams, Gericia Francis, Ayana Whitehead and Tiffany Megnath.

Indeed, Cobra.

It is the general view that each person entering a competition at any stage is already a winner.

[www.inewsguyana.com] – Guyana’s Rafieya Husain has done Guyana proud by making it to the top ten of Miss World pageant 2014 held in London today. This is the first time in 40 years that Guyana has been able to enter the top ten.

Husain also copped the ‘Beauty With a Purpose Title’, which she shared with India, Kenya, Brazil, Indonesia.

Miss South Africa emerged as the winner, while Miss Hungary Edina Kulcsar was named runner-up and Miss United States Elizabeth Safrit came third in the contest.

Miss Thailand won the People’s Choice Award. Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago are the only two English speaking Caribbean nations that have made it into the Quarterfinal stage of Miss World pageant.

iNews had earlier reported that Husain will be using her crown to raise awareness of the early signs of inter-relational violence particularly within the youth population with expectations of reducing the continuation of domestic violence in Guyana.

She told iNews then that this issue is close to her heart since she too was a victim of verbal and emotional violence in a past relationship. Husain started work on a shelter in Land of Plenty, Region Two [Pomeroon/Supenaam] which is nearing completion and will be used to help victims of domestic violence.

Rafieya will always be a champion for us. She also finished among the leaders in "Beauty with a Purpose". She radiates not only beauty but confidence and her Oxford debate earlier had an impression on her peers. She focused on domestic violence. She has done a lot of charitable work on the Essequibo Coast. She's attending a College in Manhattan and has a ways to go. I'm proud of her performance. Congrats!
