In a blatant move to have motorists pay for parking, workers attached to the Mayor and City Council on Wednesday demolished the ramp to a private parking lot which was paved for workers attached to Teleperformance Call Centre.

The ramp – which was set aside for vehicles to enter the parking lot located at the intersection of North Road and Camp Street, Georgetown – was broken to pieces

by an excavator while a section of the fence was destroyed.

According to information reaching Guyana Times, no explanation was proffered by the Mayor and City Council for this act. When this newspaper visited the area, Teleperformance representatives were still trying to make sense of what had transpired. An employee however told the media that the company will be issuing a press statement on the matter as soon as they are informed by City Hall why such as move was taken.

In December 2016, a source attached to the call centre had disclosed that the decision to have a parking lot established was taken due to the large number of workers employed with the company headquarters at Camp and Robb Streets.

Media operatives were told that the entity had been searching for a suitable space

to provide secured parking for its employees and had been negotiating with the owner of the plot of land at the corners of North Road and Camp Street. It was also disclosed by the representative of Teleperformance that permission had been granted by the M&CC.

At the time, City Engineer Colvern Venture had stated that while he was certain an application was submitted, he could not be certain whether the application was filed by the owner of the land or the call centre.

The parking meter initiative was rolled out and implemented only on Tuesday. Persons parking their vehicles near to parking meters are now obligated to pay $50 per every 15 minutes of parking. However, since its official start date, Georgetown has seen a significant decrease in parked vehicles.

They can sue till they su-su. As of last week there was a backlog of over 10,000 cases in the High Court. And there are only 13 judges. Take out your abacus and do the arithmetic. Tell us the waiting time for justice.

As i mentioned "build the ramp back" if I were the owners I would have build a mobile ramp, screw the two pricks.

Patricia and KIng should be tossed out,Guyana don't need these types.

As the City’s plan to reclaim spaces that are being used illegally by businesses and citizens continues, a team from the City Council yesterday destroyed two concrete ramps on the pavements outside of the entrances to the Teleperformance Parking Lot on Camp and Church streets.

Mayor and City Council workers using a jackhammer to destroy the concrete erection on the pavement in front of the Teleperformance Parking Lot on Camp Street.

The team from the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) which was headed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) Debra Lewis gathered around 10.00am, outside of the parking lot, where ten cars were parked, with a large excavator and a jackhammer. Lewis related to Stabroek News

that the owner of the site was given a notice when he started the preparatory works last November for the parking lot for his staff’s vehicles, but he failed to adhere to the warnings and continued the works. “They [Teleperformance] didn’t apply for permission and they were given notice in November when the council recognized that they had started,” she said, while emphasizing that the council has no record of the company applying to build the parking lot.

PRO Lewis pointed out that the two concrete elevations that were built on the pavements to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles to and from the parking lot, were not approved by the council, and can be hazardous to disabled persons. In addition to the elevations, she said that the parking lot had not been approved by the council. However, they would only be addressing the concrete structures, as they wish to give the owner an adequate amount of time to talk to the council.

“We are looking after the erections and then we will talk to him again about the parking lot. Some people are saying we are not giving fair notice, and so we want to give him the opportunity,” Lewis related, while stating the council is encouraging persons who have built illegal structures on the city’s spaces to, “come in and talk to us.”

However, while Lewis said that the company did not have permission to construct the parking lot, Stabroek News

had reported in December that an official from Teleperformance had stated that permission had been granted by the City Council for its construction.

Efforts by this newspaper yesterday to contact a representative from Teleperformance for comment were futile.

In any civilised country an application is needed for permission to build on city property. Guyana is slowly becoming civilised.

When we left, there would not have been as many vehicles as there is now. Vehicles take up space making it difficult to move around..more traffic jams etc. In T.O we are forced to either carry passengers with us so that we take advantage of curb lanes on busy streets. Driving in such a designated lane can cost a single driver a fine. These steps are taken to get people to start taking city transit or at least give rides to those going your way. Some highways are now being set up to receive a toll..something Canada never had.

Shut yuh backside, this was a targeted aggression based on ulterior motives to boost the parking meter haul. If the city council was to target modifications without permits they would find 75% of the businesses and residents guilty.

I wonder why this company and not the hundreds who have encroached, built on or built ramps on the sidewalks. Not to mention the many structures that were erected without permits or not adhering to the city's regulations. Is this a squeeze down for payment from the owner?

Even during the PPP regime era illegal structures were pulled down. This is a local government responsibility, irrespective of who the national government is. I hope that the city council speeds up its efforts to get businesses to comply with city regulations on building and premises access. We can't have business people with money start forcing pedestrians to walk in the middle of the street because of unsafe pavements.

Bibi knows that banna paid just by the way he stands...truly amazing.

What if the coolie man paid his parking and the negro haffica is bullying the coolie man for a "lil raise"? Happens all the time. You see brother Cain, sometimes it's better to pay the "brive" to the leeches than go to court. You will spend more time fighting the case and lose more in wages...especially if you are not from a close by village. These frigging bastards know this and exploit the situation.

The harassment of Indos has returned much worse than what dictator Burnham did. The know that they can shake down wealthy Indos who can pay.

They dare not do this to an Afro Guyanese.
