Talking about slavery or how the British re-invented slavery will not do us any good because we are not slaves. Indians were not slaves, they work as farmers and cane harvesters under severe pressure from the white men. Africans were the real slaves. They were shackled, beaten and sold to slave masters.

Indians also were treated like slaves. Africans were considered a commodity. They were bought from their tribal leaders who captured and caged them until the white man arrived to buy them. The white man cannot be blamed entirely. I di not blame the white man fro bringing my grandparents to Guyana. I am grateful that the white man offered my grandparents a chance to migrate and I am also grateful to my grandparents for making that journey.

The transition from slavery to Indentured Servitude was instantaneous. There was no time in between to cull old habits of the Planters and Overseers. Just as slaves were whipped so was 1838 group of Indians. Escapees of the slavery were brought back in irons and tortured in all manner until death as an example to other slaves. Escaped Indians were captured and placed in irons and brought to the courts.

Slaves were property, health and adequate food were important to maintain the effectiveness of their labour. Indians on the hand was not property, death did not bother the planters. The 1838 group complained bitterly about their starvations and lack of adequate medical attention among them.

Suffering is suffering, whether in bondage of slavery or indenturership.
