SOME $17B have been invested for the development and allocation of more than 100,000 house lots across Guyana.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Norman Whittaker, made this pronouncement last week, as the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CHPA) presented the keys to the beneficiaries of nine core homes constructed at Block XXX Non Pariel, East Coast Demerara and formally handed over to the Buxton-Foulis Neighbhourhood Democratic Council (NDC).

He pointed out that of the total number of lots distributed, 32,000 have gone to communities on the East Coast of Demerara alone.

He said: “This means that while we are divided into ten administrative regions, this part of Region 4 (Demera/Mahaica) has secured just about one third of the total house lots allocated. That translates in numbers to beneficiaries reaching almost 140,000 people.”

The Local Government Minister emphasised that the continued development of areas countrywide has by no means been selective, but has been done in an equitable, unbiased manner.

“Development is not focused on areas alone where we (PPP/C) enjoy political support… Issues on ethnicity, political affiliation and religion do not factor in on decisions of where we assist people to acquire house lots and to build their homes,” he affirmed.

The allocation and distribution process is guided by the willingness of people to work with the authorities to satisfy their needs and the willingness of agencies to support this, he added.

He charged the beneficiaries of the Core Homes to work along with the regional authorities to further improve their environment.

As to the importance of this, Whittaker said: “Maintain the buildings and work with the NDC to improve the infrastructure provided. There are billions of persons across the globe, who aspire to own their own homes, but they are a long way from achieving this. You own land, you own a home, many cannot boast of that.”

The minister also expressed the hope that the Core House project will be introduced in Amerindian communities in Region 1 (Barima/Waini) and Region 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) to bring benefits to residents there.

In addition to presenting the beneficiaries with the keys to their new homes, Block XXX, Non Pariel was officially handed over to the Buxton /Foulis NDC.

According to CH&PA representative, Germaine Stuart, the primary purpose for transferring of the scheme is to ensure that ‘the Buxton-Foulis NDC plays a more active role in the community development process by managing the local affairs and ensure any future development is carried out in a proper and harmonious manner.

Meanwhile, NDC Chairman, Randolph Blair said that the NDC is happy to accept the governance of the scheme while welcoming the core house beneficiaries into the Buxton-Foulis family.
