Corentyne primary girl wins national spelling bee competition

THOUSANDS of children from all over the country gathered at the National Cultural Centre in Georgetown yesterday to see who will be the winner representing Guyana at the Regional Spelling Bee Competition in St.Kitts and Nevis.

Mastering both segments of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) sponsored contest and coming from Berbice was Renae Bisnauth of Cropper Primary School in District Six.
She claimed the winning position in the first ever National Spelling Bee Championship in Guyana, by correctly spelling the word ‘Imperative’.
She held the attention of the crowd with her confidence and bold characteristics throughout the entire spelling process and gave the Guyanese public and her sponsors the assurance that she has the ability to cope with the challenge of representing this country abroad at the regional battle.

Seaking at the forum, Education Minister Shaik Baksh said that this partnership seeks to create an interest in the minds of children.
“We want the children of Guyana to possess a deep and keen interest in education and, if they do, we will get the outcome of attendance and results needed”.
Mr. Baksh said that this spelling bee competition is strong for the educational and motivational advancement of the country’s school system.
The minister urged the children to attend school regularly noting the importance and the full benefit of the curriculum planned out for them.
He also encouraged the teachers to be regular and punctual at school, thus completing the curriculum needed for quality education.
He said this year Education Month has been a rich and vibrant one, filled with activities in keeping with transforming Guyana’s education sector even while there were a few challenges.
“Yet we heard snide remarks from some sections of the media talking about it is best we didn’t have an Education Month this year. In this month we focus on the intellectual things that will benefit and develop the child’s mentality,” Baksh noted.
He pointed to the fact that Education Month spawns the country and as such, he is pleased with the Ministry’s goal in advancing equity in education is being accomplished, thus realising children’s full potential.
“In the next three years, we want to implement science and technology labs in all the schools across Guyana,” he reiterated.
Strong vision
The Minister said the Government has a very strong vision which aims to benefit the children of Guyana through science and technology.
He said the Education Ministry continues to build partners in developing the sector. “It’s not about the Ministry alone; it’s about all the particulars who are involved., parents you must ensure your child’s attendance level is up; you must ensure that they have what is needed for school,” Baksh insisted.
The Minister said:“No child should be left behind, all children should move up the education ladder.”
He challenged the students to make a determination whether they would be tomorrow’s lawyers and doctors, warning that it will only be accomplished by studying and through education.
He declared it is high time that Guyana regains and take its place in education among the Caribbean countries.
Meanwhile GT&T’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yog Mahadeo said that he is overwhelmed with the response from the competition, since it is the first ever to be put forward at the national level.
“I am heartened at the response shown for the GT&T’s spelling Bee competition and I am pleased that we have decided to go along with the idea, he said.
He assured that this was only the beginning of what the company has in store for the children of Guyana.
“When we started this competition, the aim was to enhance the way children speak and the way they present themselves,” he revealed.
He commended the efforts of the children that came in support of the competition from far-flung areas to be on board with the initiative and said he believes it is also beneficial to them.
“The difference with this competition is that it’s a national competition in its true flavours, children coming to show off their skills and abilities that have been instilled into them through spelling, Mahadeo stated.
He added that the goal is to identify young, bold, talented children who will be representing Guyana as future leaders of tomorrow.
Mahadeo said today Guyanese no longer have to look overseas to realise dreams, since the country is moving apace and everything is set for a better tomorrow.
